I recently attended a USMA parents briefing.

The Admissions rep said that of the approximately 17,000 applicants who applied to USMA last year, only TWO applicants achieved the maximum score on all six CFA events.

Wow that's crazy, I just maxed out on three events at West Point SLE, I don't know how I could ever hit the max on the basketball throw

Maxing all 6 is crazy! Ds maxed 2, but that BB throw is his Achilles heel.

How do you train to do pull-ups? My DS wasn't able to do any!
Do pull-ups. Every day. Several times a day. Get a pull-up bar and never walk past it without knocking out a few. If you can't do a pull-up, use a stool to get yourself in the up position and then slowly lower yourself. Rinse and repeat.

There are tons and tons of online pull up programs. Stew Smith has some great programs out there and used to teach at USNA. Lots of options, just have to work at it.

Almost aced all of the sections of the CFA... The BB-Throw was definitely a learning experience. ;)

Suggestion for future/current applicants... Pull-up/Push-up burpees. Well worth the pain.

A year ago, my DS could barely do two pullups. But six months before SLE, he would practice pullups every other day by doing 4 sets of them as much as he could. Slowly, he started see big improvements. Also, he did bicep curls and rope climbs. He was one short of maxing it at SLE and maxed it at NASS. Pushups, pullups, situps and run can all be improved by constant training.

Only two maxed? That is hard to believe, but it makes me feel great about my sons scores because he either maxed or came within shouting distance of most if not each of them; but it is a very hard test. I think some body types pose a particular challenge. My son is over 6' tall, and broad shouldered. He missed maxing the mile run by only a few seconds though.

The thing like about the bb throw is that no one goes into that with experience. You have to work on it individually in order to figure it out.

The numbers suprise me. When we visited USNA an admissions officer said that around 10% of their applicants max the CFA. I told him that is shocking. Now I wonder if his information was accurate. We all know that usma has the most fit candidates, right?

I bet there are quite a few that are close to maxing most of them. DS can do sit ups, push ups and run a mile pretty easy. Pull ups are hit or miss, at USMA he said his hands slipped and no re-grip allowed so a lower number. BB throw and shuttle run are not as strong. Thankfully once you are in those two go away and the long jump and 600 meter run are added in. The run is longer too but that only helps DS. Its the sprinting that gets in his way.
