Ok, so I am a sophomore right now and trying to figure out my course load for next year. I would love to go to USAFA and major in Chemistry, however I have seen that service academies generally favor applicants to have taken classes in Chemistry, Biology, and Physics. I already took biology last year and Chemistry this year, so I am wondering, should I take physics next year even if I want to major in Chemistry?

Yes. Everyone should have a foundation in physics, especially chem majors.

I agree that physics is a great foundational class for any STEM program but my DD was appointed to both USNA and USAFA for 2020 and she did not take high school physics.

She chose to take AP Chemistry instead.

I would still advise her to have taken physics but not having taken it did not hurt her from being appointed.

The SAs are looking to see if you have taken a rigorous academic schedule with a strong math/science foundation.

You are going to take physics at the SA and having taken it in high school will be helpful but not insurmountable if you haven't

For a good High School foundation in the sciences you want to take Bio, Chem and Physics. That would cover 3 years. In the 4th year take the AP level course in the science you have the most passion for or what fits into your schedule. Which science you pick for your senior year will not have any impact on the admissions process as long as it the the highest level course your school offers.
