hi everyone, quick question. For the USNA summer seminar swimming portion, what should be expected? I have never taken legit swimming classes, but I am able to tread water and swim and elementary paces (aka I won't drown but really can't swim), so will I still be okay? Also, sorry if this is a dumb question, but where do we end up swimming? Indoors or outdoors?

Thank you!

Hi! Check out the USNA website the summer seminar area has pictures from last years that shows. It looks to be outside.

I just completed session 1 of NASS 2016. The only time you will swim at NASS is during sea trials on the last full day of your session. The Midshipmen make it clear to the candidates to NOT participate in the swimming exercises unless you are confident in your swimming capabilities. If you do participate in the swimming exercises you will be expected to relay swim with your squad and to tread water without using your hands (it's really tough). Do not be embarrassed if you can't swim, there will be many candidates who don't participate. Make sure to pack goggles!

New to me for Navy - I always heard Marines using "Iron Ducks" for non-swimmers. No doubt it is a joint term now.

Another: "Aqua Rocks" - the ones who sink to the bottom of the pool. Often applied to athletes with such low body fat and heavy muscle mass they had buoyancy challenges. Often joked they could walk across the pool bottom faster than swimming.

I was about to say they are called aqua rocks! Capt beat me to it!

We've had a few in the sponsor family. Varsity sprinter son with legs of steel and tiny body fat % used to make the "pool bottom walker" joke.

So I'm actually one of the people who runs the pool phase of Sea Trials this year. As A299 mentioned, I will make it very clear that if at anytime a candidate feels uncomfortable with any part of the swimming portion, they can stop and get out, or not participate completely with no consequences and none of the detailers will give you a hard time or look down on it either. We understand that everyone comes from different background and not everyone has had the same opportunity when it comes to learning how to swimming/tread water. Swimming portion will take place inside the Water Polo pool of MacD (indoors).

Hope this helps!
