NROTC - Initial Travel Reimbursement

It appears that there is travel reimbursement for the student [only] for the initial move to college. I am assuming this is for flight. What if parents are driving the student to college, will they reimburse for mileage?

You will be reimbursed for the expenses of your initial travel to your assigned NROTC Unit as it is considered official travel.

You will also be reimbursed for travel from either your home or school to the site of your summer cruise.

There is a form to complete for mileage or airfare.

The JTRs generally allow for the use of a personally owned vehicle for distances of up to 400 miles (..or 800 round trip). The gaining command has to authorize trips longer, the JTRs are also explicit in the fact that personal connivence isn't a reason to authorize the trip.

While this is true... it isn't that simple. I would think the gaining command will explain what exactly is authorized for your particular trip. Though if you want to read the literature for yourself about what is authorized you can read for yourself here:

Why yes it is 1600 pages. Just wait until you have to use DTS on your own. Truly exhilarating.

New scholarship students will only get a reimbursement for their air travel to school in the fall, or a reimbursement for the mileage driven if traveling by car. Hotels, meals, etc. are not covered. Don't go crazy on the airline tickets- NROTC is not going to reimburse first class tickets or anything of that nature! Parents do not get anything if they fly or travel separately. In this case, since you're driving the student, it should be the same as if the student was driving themselves as far as the travel claim goes. Call the HRA at the NROTC unit to inquire as to the specifics.

Also know that the reimbursement will go as a direct deposit into your Midshipman's account, not sent to the parents who probably paid for the plane ticket.

Can you cite a reference? I suspect "Don't go crazy" doesn't appear in any government instruction for travel. Are you suggesting that they won't be reimbursed more than the government rate (https://cpsearch.fas.gsa.gov/)? are you suggesting they book travel through SATO (...I never did this as M/N)?

If I was particularly inclined, I certainly could give a reference. However, it's Sunday night, so......

My last two freshman classes have all been reimbursed their full airline receipts without issue. Our HRA informs incoming students that they'll be reimbursed in line with what the government would have paid for their airline travel. Therefore, as I said, things like first class aren't going to fly. Just book a coach ticket and you'll be fine.
