My question is when is firearms training conducted during BCT? My guess is second Beast but I just wanted to confirm. Also, what firearms do the cadets learn how to shoot? Finally, after BCT ends, is there anyway to continue to practice shooting on a range or some type of team? Thanks!
 
Yes, during 2nd BCT. I believe it is still the M16A2 (but my info is dated). There are several teams you can try to join that do shooting. The NCAA rifle team (olympic style, precision shooting), the Sandhurst team (infantry skills competition, including service rifle), and the Combat Shooting Team (Carbine, pistol, and some shotgun, with marksmanship and tactics being the primary focus).

Do you have to have prior weapons knowledge to join any of those teams? Or is there any team where you can learn?
 
2019 shot M4's during Basic. We are using M16A1/2's for ESET, though. Opportunities to continue firearms training are limited, but they do exist, as raimius said.

I don't know of any clubs/teams that offer opportunities to practice marksmanship for those without prior experience. You might consider visiting a shooting range off base and practicing your skills there, prior to attempting to join one of those teams.

I could be wrong, but I believe during ESET, cadets are trained with handguns (M9), but yes, during Second BCT, you will shoot an M4 carbine down at CATM.

Sorry, I should have mentioned the handgun training in my earlier post. I just finished ESET and we did indeed shoot M9's as well as M16's at CATM.
 
My ds made the cst ( combat shooting team) as a c4 and enjoys his time on and with the team. The tryouts are competitive and physically and mentally challenging. He had some .22 rifle experience through scouting and served as an assistant on the range for a few weeks, but his experience was limited, and he had no handgun experience prior to the Academy. The cst is more about team work , they will teach the methods and practices and discipline.
 
Question: My son is gearing up for USAF ROTC field training. Anyone now what the firearms routine is for qualification?

There at least used to be an optional PE course you could take that used pistols (do not recall the type) The shooting team just had a young man qualify for the US Olympic Team.

Call the coach directly for details. Even if you are new to the sport, if there is room, many of these teams will work with you (not that you would be allowed to compete initially).

All clubs/sports provide a briefing during BCT about how it will work for those interested.
