Hi everyone. As many of you probably were, I am really excited/nervous to start ROTC this fall! However my school does not have a ton of specific information on the website, so I was wondering if you could tell me what the first couple days are like. Specifically, I was wondering about when you get uniforms, if there is any type of ceremony, and any forms that you will probably have to fill out.

Thanks so much!

Are you a ROTC scholarship recipient?

I would also say it varies school by school regarding those 1st few days. Some dets. will have students arrive before the official move in day for ROTC orientation and some will not.

The one thing that is in common no matter what school you are attending will be the PFA will be administered within that 1st week. Work out and make sure your form is correct

No, I'm not a scholarship recipient. Thanks for the info about the apft, I wasn't sure when it would be administered for the first time. I'm pretty sure we don't move in earlier, I haven't come across anything about that so far. Thanks for the information!

What branch of ROTC?

Every battalion does things differently, but you can expect an orientation that takes place over a few days, including an APFT. There may be a contracting ceremony for scholarship students who have passed the APFT and for upperclassmen, scholarship or not, who have been admitted into the Advanced Course. I don't know if they will provide uniforms to non-scholarship cadets - they didn't used to.

The best person to contact for a schedule is the ROO, but the most reliable way to get info may be to get to know the administrative assistant/secretary to the PMS. That individual has probably been there for years. Find out in advance if there is any paperwork you need to fill out or medical or other records (e.g., birth certificate) you should assemble.

No reason to be nervous - the number of non-scholarship students will be larger than scholarship winners. As suggested by others, the best way to get favorable notice is to do well on the APFT. Many of the new cadets will fail one or more parts of it.

Thanks so much for the info. I'm going to be working really hard this summer to make sure that I don't only pass the apft, but that I do as well as I can!

Do they provide uniforms for 3-year AD scholarship Cadets freshmen year? I know 3 years still receive the complimentary room and board stipend freshmen year just like the 4 years at my school.

Yes, 3 years get treated the same as the 4 year cadets. The non-contracted people sometimes get shorted on things like PT gear and assault packs, etc. This may vary by battalion, of course.

Why not call the unit you will be at to get specifics? After all they'll actually KNOW. Also, they'll probably (not always) send you some mail/email in July to make you aware of this type of stuff, especially if they expect you there early. Not only does stuff vary by Battalion, it can also change from year to year at any given Battalion. The only way to be sure you're getting the straight skinny is to talk to an officer at the Battalion.
