Hello all- I'm new to the forum. I'm going to be entering UC Berkeley's NROTC unit this year as a scholarship holder, and I was wondering what general policy is on haircuts, or rather, how strict unit leadership is on it (I'm a guy). I know it varies from unit to unit and that things are a bit more lax after indoc, but I still thought I'd ask. So, if anyone is familiar with Berkeley NROTC, please respond! Thanks!

Rob

Although I suppose it's possible, it's news to me that it varies from unit to unit and that there is any laxity about it. So far as I know, your haircut will be within regulations regardless of unit. Of course Marines Options, being Marines, exceed the regulations (meaning they are way within regs :D).

At Purdue, the Navy guys (ROTC) wear their hair a lot shorter than the Air Force guys. My son is in AFROTC and while his hair is a lot shorter than usual, it doesnt look unusual. The Navy guys look like the are military. He went to Field training recently and he got cut his hair real short for that. He had it cut 2 on top and 1 on the side (assuming that means anything to you.) I think the Navy guys keep their hair that short year round. However, I cant swear by that as I dont see them year round.

I would strongly recommend just keeping it short all the time. Buzz cuts are fashionable nowadays, along with shaved on side and back and some on top. Personally I always get a short flat top, Marine Corps style.

I do AFROTC, and some people do have longer hair for sure, along with a lot of my NROTC friends. However, just keep it simple! Short hair is cool, and I can assure you many of your regular classmates will have it as well.

In our experience, no matter how short your hair is when you arrive for "Orientation" (or whatever your battalion calls your initiation period) they will cut it shorter.;)

In my DS NROTC New Midshipman Information Packet it states "Your appearance must be within standards when you report for new student orientation. This includes no dying of hair or beards. Male candidates will be given a haircut on the first day if not within standards."

IMHO, make sure your hair is well within standards. You do not want to be "that one" that needs to have a hair cut on the first day.

I think it really does vary unit by unit. Yes, there is a minimum standard, but at my DD's NROTC unit, they all tend to lean very much toward the more extreme Marine style hair cuts and styles for women, as well.

I recently just met some midshipmen from Cal over Cortramid and it seems like their haircuts were pretty standard. Short on the sides, atleast a 1 or 1.5 and the top is pretty much don't have too much bulk.

That's what I do all year around (AFROTC). It's easy and looks good. Mid fade, 2 on top, 1 on sides.
