Embry-Riddle AFROTC?

Hi guys, first time poster..

I was recently accepted into Embry-Riddle Daytona Beach for Aeronautical Science! I'm a bit older (23 as of this writing, finishing up my first bachelors degree in a few weeks) than most, but now that my life is in better order than when I was 18, I've decided I want to give my childhood dream of being an Air Force Officer and Pilot a chance (and not leaving it as a pipe dream I'll regret in 30 years..)

I was curious if anyone here is or was a part of Embry-Riddle AFROTC in Daytona. I'm planning a campus visit in a few weeks, and I wanted to know who I should talk to? I don't know that I want ROTC to be my path for commissioning (I'm looking at OTS as well given the age thing), but I do know that I want to go into the military. Any help would be appreciated!

Off the topic, but if you have a degree already why aren't you doing OTS instead of another 4 yrs in ROTC?

The person to speak to is the det commander. Call the det and set up an appointment, don't just arrive on their doorstep, b/c they may not be able to give you enough time to review everything with you.

It's a BFA, I'm going for a BS.. both a recruiter I spoke to, and the cadet commandant at my current school who is himself an OTS grad, and told me OTS applicants with Bachelors of Science (I hate calling them BS degrees) degrees are much more competitive than those without. I also just had a friend with a very high GPA and a great score on the AFOQT and whatnot get rejected from OTS. We suspect because her degree was also a BFA had something to do with it, which, even though there is no way for us to really know why she was turned down, it has me a bit paranoid about it now.. anything I can do to maximize my chances! *Crosses his fingers*

What was her AFOQT...I ask because many people will state I had a great SAT/ACT score, only for it to come out later what they considered great was really mediocre....i.e. 30 ACT is not great...35 is! 1300 out of 1600 is not fab, but 1500 is!

The AFOQT is a huge factor for ROTC and OTS on whether you will get a UPT slot.

I do understand the BFA component, but is there a way that you can transfer undergrad courses, and grad with a BS in 2 yrs for your major? The one reason I ask this is for timing purposes regarding flying. I know the cut off is 28 1/2 prior to in processing for UPT, you will be at least 27 when you graduate. (23 currently + 4 yrs if you grad on time) Here's the problem, UPT/UNT slots go 1st to AFA graduates, than ROTC. Bullet graduated in May and started 10 months later when the pipeline was running smoothly. There are alot of rumblings that the pipeline is going to slowdown, to you that can be a deal breaker. I can tell you that there were at least 2 AFA grads that were PCS'd to SJAFB for casual status until they went to UPT. They were sent casual status for months, b/c there was no slot available. Again AFA goes 1st, ROTC/OTC second.

I don't mean to be the downer, but only to give a piece of realism. Go get that BS, but don't do it if it is only to fly, b/c nobody can predict that pipeline.

Finally, remember your det commander will have a say in your future. If he/she does not support you for UPT/UNT than its over, their rec is a part of the decision. I think with your drive and determination you will get their support, but don't go down this route if flying is the only reason.

Believe me, I've thought about this a lot.. I appreciate the concern and warnings : )

I'm working that out with them now, actually as of last week it looks like I'll be able to complete everything in two - three years (tow if I go straight through the summers). The program itself is designed to take three years, it only goes four because of liberal arts requirements.. which I have plenty of credits to pick from in that sense (double minored in International Relations and History for my current degree, on top of my GenEd requirements). We'll have to see..

So how will ROTC work then, since they also have a course curiculumn?

I'd have to do the two year program rather than the four.

It sounds like the Gods are smiling down on you You must be very happy that you can graduate much earlier and start your flying career at a younger age!

My girls have a good friend who is AFROTC at ER. She absolutely loves it and is having a ball.
