USAFA Application Portal Is Now Open for the Class of 2021

Ugh! DD is up and ready to go too!! Just reading the letter and seeing that it says she is a "tentative candidate for admission" gives me chills. Good Luck to all during this journey!

My DS received a letter saying application has potential for admission and there will be additional instructions in July. Does anyone know how you go from having potential to becoming a candidate?

Once your DS application is reviewed and deemed "competitive" he will get promoted to "candidate" with the following in his portal. Just be patient ...

"You have been promoted to Candidate status. Please open the attached letter for details."

Thanks for info!

I would suggest starting by reading every page you can find on the USAFA admissions website, www.academyadmissions.com. That site alone will answer many of your questions and give you an excellent description of the application process. Good luck! :D

Yes, mostly done. He is finalizing essays now and should have the ALO interview soon. Then waiting on teachers and the counselor to send in their stuff. Nomination packets are pretty much complete as well.

Kudos to your DS for getting the application package done so early. Do you expect to get a decision from USAFA admissions before 2016 is over ?

My application says I am a competitive applicant but there is no portal, what should I do now? (Excuse my username I am applying to all the SAs)

USAFA is now using the "Rolling Admissions" to better manage the number of applications. For the first wave (July), the deadline to complete the package is 01Nov. Be patient and your number will come ...

Hi there! We are also in the thick of things with DS as well. His application packet is almost complete, except for the HS/college transcripts & school profile (school counselor assures they are "on the way"). He completed his CFA this morning, and did very well, and his DoDMERB is scheduled for Monday. Nomination packets for all applicable MOC's are submitted.

Now, possibly the hardest part....the wait!!

I'm so glad this forum is here, so we can all walk through this journey together!!

Oops...forgot the ALO interview...That will be coming soon, as well. Our DS's ALO is the best, and our family has really developed a strong relationship with him!!

DS is complete with USNA, and his part complete for USAFA, waiting on counselor submission/mail. Had his ALO interview last night. Dodmerb done. Nomination packets done. Still waiting on USMA to open :/

DS has now completed all parts of his application. However, his DoDMERB shows a "Complete Hold" status, which was explained as meaning that Concorde is working with the examiners to obtain additional information. I don't know if this is a minor, temporary "hiccup" or if this means we may be looking at some type of remediation. We can't do anything but wait to see what happens. DS breezed through the physical with no issues, except for a VERY minor issue with the auditory test. He failed to acknowledge one very low tone, but the examiner acted like it was no big deal and promptly told him he still "passed" the test, according to their scales. My guess is that this is the one thing needing clarification, and I hope the examiners do an adequate job of explaining their findings. Other than the typical childhood illnesses (colds, flu, etc), eustachian tubes as a baby, a tonsillectomy, and a very minor concussion in football 2 yrs ago, he is healthy as a horse. I really don't see this being an eliminating factor. Worst case scenario, I could see remediation, but I'm hoping even that isn't necessary. Nevertheless, since my husband is about to worry himself into a dither over it, please pray for a quick and easy resolution.

Update on DS's DodMERB hold (for anyone curious)...Turns out that the hold was due to sloppily submitted forms on the part of the medical staff who conducted the physical and nothing more (at this point). When contacted, DodMET carefully and meticulously went over every spot on the form that presented an issue. They were things such as "we can't read the doctor's handwriting," "they failed to mark anything under 'active duty', 'civilian', 'reserves', etc", "they put one date on one page of the form and a date two days later on the other pages," etc.

While this is a relief that the problem didn't originate on DS's end of things, I am quite concerned at the lack of effort put forth on the part of the medical staff to provide DodMERB a complete, accurate and legible documentation of the physical. The findings of these physicals could potentially halt the candidate's progress, so you would think they would be exceptionally careful and thorough. Of course, they ARE contracted to do this, and aren't nearly as "vested" in the process as DodMERB is, but still...

It's all water under the bridge, now that his paperwork has now been elevated to the next step, but be aware, if you find yourself in the same situation, that the issue could be something as simple as an overlooked check box or a glazed over section or even a physician's sloppy handwriting.

At least, we learned a lesson about not getting into a panic prematurely!! :)
