I was wondering if anyone has any experience boxing at USNA in the club and could describe how much you knew before joining. If possible, it would be nice to know what tryouts and a typical practices would be like. Any information, even second hand, would be helpful. I have been boxing now for about 3 months, but I don't know what to expect. Thank you in advance.

I had several friends box at USNA. Some were very experienced and others had none. The club is a very close group with a ton of history and tradition. They workout a lot to include some morning conditioning. If it interests you, give it a shot. As a club sport, you would practice most days that you didn't have drill.

Search YouTube for Army-Navy Game Boxing Smoker," held the night before the football game.

Also search for a very well done segment that was done on Real Sports this year about the USNA boxing program and the coach. I do know there is a boxing smoker over Plebe summer and that all Plebes are required to take boxing during the AC year.

My mistake...it was 60 Minutes Sports from March 1 of this year. Can't find a link but it's a great overview of the steep tradition of Brigade Boxing.

Boxing is huge in the Navy. When DS had his CVW last year, it happened to be the same weekend as the Brigade Boxing Champoinships. They take it very seriously and with good reason. There were some seriously talented atheletes in the competition. Although, we were obviosuly seeing the end result of what I understand is a significant elimination tournament. Fast forward a few months and DS makes his first call home during PS and tells us he thinks he's going to box at the academy as his sport! God save us.

I realize this is an old thread, but after scouting this site for info about Navy boxing, I've got to ask... When exactly do Plebes sign up for clubs/sports? Do tryouts take place during Plebe Summer or do they take place when the Ac Year begins?

Maybe off topic...but note the comment in 60 Minutes about everyone boxing...and everyone has a plan until they get hit. One of my favorite memories is boxing in PE. Everyone goes in with a plan, deals are made ..ie." let's make this look good, but I have a big weekend with my girlfriend this weekend..so lets take it easy."
Once the first punch hits, all bets are off !

DS is doing club boxing. Don't think there were tryouts. His first bout in the championship tourney is this weekend. Championships next weekend (not many in his weight class).

The key with USNA boxing, and the first thing they teach you, is to maintain class and dignity when you lose to Army. And, to get used to it.

@desw2, while it is a club sport at USNA, all Plebes participate in boxing during Plebe Summer. Many sports have tryouts during PS. You will know when and where to go during your time there.

For @brovol and everyone else, boxing is a club sport at USNA, which I believe is different from West Point. I heard about the challenge from the cadet a few months ago. All I can find is this response:

Thank you for the video Dico; Its a great piece.
My DD is class of 2020. She pulled a couple of A s first Semester, but she was proudest by far of an A she earned in her boxing unit. She said that for a couple of days after she got the grade she made a point of telling her PS platoon and company leaders that she'd pulled the A, because "girls don't typically get A s in boxing".

She laughed as she told me that she'd had a teammate and friend from her NCAA sport in her Boxing class. They drew each other for their match-final, and "beat the crap out of each other".

It just occurred to me that the Ivy league will award BAs/BSs to around 7000 women this year; the USNA will award BA's/BSs to around 270 women---- who can figuratively and literally take a punch. Speaking from 30years experience in the law and business, that’s a huge advantage for USNA female Mids, HUGE!

LOL. Actually Boxing is a club sport at WP too, but it is part of a national association (no varsity boxing). WP has won the national boxing championship something like 5 out of the last 8 years. Army and Navy traditionally have a boxing competition during Army/Navy week, but this year Navy opted out.

The video is cute (in fact most Navy stuff is cute), particularly the prediction about Navy beating Army on the gridiron. And before all those responses about how many times Navy beat Army before this year, just remember, you are only as good as your last game.

It ain't cute. Boxing, Pugiel sticks in the pit can be brutal. Lots of club sports too pick from, go for it.

Hello everyone, bringing this thread back again.

I have glasses and very poor vision and I understand contacts aren't allowed during plebe summer ... so do plebes wear glasses during boxing or are plebes who need glasses just swinging blindly at their opponents?

Sorry to be a bother, but I'm a worrier and I usually like to mentally prep myself before things if possible. Asking because of the above and because I've been punched with glasses before and it left a nasty painful mark on my face LOL

You won't wear glasses for boxing. If you have contacts, you might be able to get them in before class even then you risk losing those. You honestly box maybe 1-2 times in the summer, mostly working on form. You might spar for 2-3 minutes. Its nothing to worry about.
