A Word of Encouragement

Hello all! It's been a while since I've posted anything here, but I have a story that might be encouraging to someone out there.

My DS wasn't a jock (he played on the tennis team just to check the box). He aced all the AP classes offered at his high school, joined CAP, and had great test scores.

The pending LOA came. We thought he was set. Then a childhood history of asthma and a "failed" methacholine challenge test resulted in a rejection letter. Rejected. On to Plan B.

The story he got a week later was that someone in admissions saw his application had been rejected, picked it up and walked it in hand to the powers that be and said, "We want this one."

He got a call, "Please come."

Four years of blood, sweat, tears, and sleep deprivation later he's getting his commission and walking across that stage. On to graduate school, then ENJJPT. Drop night was last night...

The point is strive to make yourself so good that it pains them to have to turn you down.

From rejected to an F-22 -- What a ride!!

Makes the victory that much sweeter!

Sweet indeed.

I hope whoever it was in admissions that made the extra effort to get him admitted knows how things turned out. Their intuition about this one was spot on (maybe even better than mine, his own father). I hope and pray the rest of his career with the Air Force is as successful as it has been to this point, but none of it would have been possible without the intervention of the individual flying that desk!:)

Thanks! This is really encouraging to me going through the process right now.

Good. Keep pushing ahead.

I know there's some discouraged young person out there reading all the things on this site that make them think they have to be the star quarterback and point guard, all-conference miler, president of the student council, AND dating the head cheerleader (or whatever the female equivalents would be for these activities) to have a chance at an appointment. Don't think that. Would that superman or superwoman have an advantage in the appointment hunt? Sure, but you can do things to check the box like my DS did - two years of a minor high school sport (no varsity letter) - to somewhat level the playing field (sorry for the sports metaphor).

There's probably somebody else with a dusty old inhaler sitting in their drawer who's afraid their medical record is going to trip them up.

My son's story is certainly exceptional, not the rule, out of the ordinary, not to be expected...and yet it happened, it's real, he's living his dream.

It can happen for you.
