Hi, I am a high school senior applying for an Army ROTC scholarship. About the physical fitness assessment required for the application:

Could anyone confirm whether or not the exact numbers on this test generate a score that is one factor in determining who gets a scholarship? I had thought that it did from previous readings on this forum, although I recently visited some of my top colleges and spoke to the ROOs and/or other ROTC cadre at each school, and they all said something to the effect of it just giving the board an idea of where I stand physically and whether I'd be able to pass the real Army PFT, rather than actually receiving a exact score on the exact number of push-ups etc. If I have a bit below average physical scores will I be affected in the selection process much, as long as I have scores that aren't terrible?

I know this is impossible to say for certain, but would anyone mind looking at my most recent practice test scores and giving input on whether these would prevent me from receiving a 4-year? I do have very high academic test scores so I am hoping they'll balance out low physical test scores.
(17 y/o male):
30 push-ups in 1 minute
65 sit-ups in 1 minute
7:02 mile time

Also, does anyone know if the coach administering the PFA must do anything after the test is completed, or if there is any reason the test must be completed much before the document submission deadline? Can I just upload the PFA scorecard immediately after the test? I am currently planning on completing it in the first few days of October so I can make sure it's in on time for the October 7th deadline. Ideally I'd like to postpone taking it as long as possible so I can continue to improve my scores. Is there any reason I would need to complete it before then, to make sure I can be boarded on time?

Thank you so much for your time.

Ask the PMS you are going to interview with, usually they want a copy of the test brought to the interview. Typically, the interview is the final step before everything else is done and you can be "board ready". My daughter postponed her interview to retake the ACT and give herself longer to prepare for the fitness test. She was trying to get a higher score on both and needed to take those in to the interview. She did upload her PFT as soon as she completed it though. After the interview was loaded she switched to "board ready".

Hi BFHSJ,
First, be sure to do a thorough search on these forums before asking "basic" questions. It's good practice for the "real world", where young officers are expected so show some initiative in problem solving!

Having said that, read over the blog post by Clarsksonarmy - he's been maintaining it for years, and it has invaluable information about the Application process. You'll have more questions through this process - this forumn and his blog are great resources to find answers.

For the PFA, the last time I checked it still provided 150 points toward your Whole Person Score. The Max amounts were: Pushups 50, Situps 50, Run 6:30. If you can meet those you max the 150 possible points. I don't have the exact scale, and I don't know if these are still the standards.

Best of luck in this process!

Just curious, do you know if there was a separate female standard? I understand you might not know the exact numbers, but since I have never found the 1 minute standard, just wondering if you knew?

The LTC Kirkland book has the scoring scale for both male and female. The numbers I quoted above are the max for male, I don't recall the female (I'm a proud owner of a DS, no DDs in the house!). I'm making an assumption the scale he included is accurate....I'm quoting last years edition, and I'm guessing nothing has changed with the ROTC scoring.

Thanks everyone for your replies!

I had actually seen Clarksonarmy's blog post on the topic a while ago and had always thought that to be the case, but when I was asking questions to the ROOs/cadre at each of my top 5 schools when I visited, they all said that there was either no max score for the PFA or it was not given a score at all. I thought this was odd so I came to these forums to double/triple check.

Thanks a ton for the max amounts! I've been looking for those for a while.
