This is a really random question, but I hear all about people getting blisters and how all midshipman need to take care of their feet, especially during Plebe summer. I live in Colorado where there is practically no moisture at all and blisters are pretty much unheard of. I was wondering what people do to prevent/help blisters. This is especially important because I am going to NASS and I didn't have any clue what to expect because of the difference in humidity.

Hey Colorado: Being a marathon runner, I have two big helps for blisters:
1) Talcum powder(small amount) before each run. Try different kinds, for me baby powder works great.
2) Liquid bandage, or Second skin (different names exist!), a liquid bandage that you beef up on problem areas as they occur. 2 coats can work wonders!
ALSO: My son is waiting in Diana DeGette's district for USN Appointment; Who is your rep?
Good luck and Godspeed

My son did not have any problems with NASS and blisters. Plebe Summer, well his feet were gross all summer. Mole skin helps ease pain and good foot powder to try to prevent.

I don't think there's alot you can do except have good shoes that fit well for NASS. I can't imagine you'd have a big problem with blisters from NASS.

Our plebe had HORRID blisters during Plebe Summer. He took pictures once the Ac Year started, and he used a Quarter as a reference point. The quarter looked small by comparison. I just think: new shoes (boots, dress shoes, etc), new routine, new sports, new standards of endurance, all added up to be hard on the feet.

He got some anti-fungal creme at the Mid Store and made extra efforts for about a WEEK, and they went right away.

I think some sports are harder on the feet than others, too.

For NASS? Don't fret.

Agree with others that NASS shouldn't create too much of a blister problem. You will be wearing your own shoes at all times that week, so just make sure they are broken in, and they fit you well.

Be sure to take more than one pair of shoes to NASS! You will need a pair to wear to classes, a pair for general running around, and a pair that will get stinky and soaking wet in the Severn!!

GuitarHero-thanks for the advise, it will be good to be prepared for NASS or plebe summer. My rep is Coffman and I'm going to start on nomination paperwork and such this summer.

Profmom2/huskiesmama-im glad i wont have any issues at ss, but it sounds like I'll definitely need to be prepared for plebe summer if I get in!

One thing that I can add that hasn't been said already is that if you get a blister and it ruptures, don't take off the skin. Leave it there so that you still have some protection and so that the blister heals faster (just slap a band aid or mole skin or something over it). Other than that, dry your feet asap after they get wet and wear good fitting shoes.

Have fun at NASS.

This will sound a bit moronic but...... son recently had blisters from some pretty long runs. He used duct tape on them. Crazy I know. But he said some EMT guys told him about it & he said it worked wonders.

(disclaimer - he could have been pulling my chain as he often does .......)

I run cross country and distance for track. So I get more blisters than you can imagine. Blisters aren't too bad. I mean they are annoying, but once you start running or doing activities, it won't really hold you back. It's just a slight sting every time you move. But the best part is that calluses build up really quickly so you don't even get them anymore.

Everything else has been covered, so this is my piece:
Take moleskin (it's cheap at CVS or Rite-Aid or something), cut a hole in the center the size of your blister, then put the 'skin around the blister. This doesn't do anything other than raise the level of contact to around the blister, which relieves pressure.
Works for me!

Remember to wear your shower shoes! Blisters are a great entry point for athlete's foot.

If you’re on a long march and don’t have a break…..NEVER take your boots off, but un-tie them, throw some more powder in your socks and boots and wait as long as possible to re-tie.

Please elaborate for my own curiosity.

Also, wearing combat boots make your feet look ugly…..trust me.

LOL. No joke. I wore Jungle Boots aboard ship, laced up tight (ankle support is great on those flippin' ladders), and I STILL have the echos of their wear from just over my ankles down. :shake:

I can only imagine what forced marches in them would do.

Your feet swell. As a result, you may not be able to get your boots back on when it is time to go.

I have seen this happen on more than one occasion.

I figured as much.

I bet that Marine had one seriously-ticked-off Gunny all over his arse.

It actually does work. I backpack, and after long uphill hikes in the damp woods blisters tend to pop up. My brother and I keep duct tape on our trek poles for this very purpose. (and for many others. Duct tape = Hercules)
