Ive watched many videos and seen many pictures of plebe summer activities. I noticed that none of the female plebes have their hair tied back, even when running, working out, etc. Is this a rule? When are the females allowed to tie their hair back again?

For Plebe Summer, it's cut short enough at the back so it falls above the top edge of the uniform collar, so no need to tie it back. Wake up, roll out of the rack, run a comb through, no puff and fluff time needed. No clipped/rubber banded ponytails in dress or class uniforms anyway. The grow-out struggle starts during the ac year, going through that phase where it's too long to be left down, and hard to get it up in a professional bun. There are regs that govern hair styles in uniform, and service women learn all the techniques from those more senior. There are also plenty of YouTube videos. Just look up Sock Bun. Or Military Bun.

Military women's hair falls generally in 3 categories:
- short, pixie cut or natural style
- bob cut short enough to clear the top edge of the collar in the back
- long hair put up in buns or braids that meet regs

Regs on colors of bands, how many barrettes, etc. Welcome to the military!

During Plebe Summer it is cut to the top of the jaw bone. As Capt MJ stated... Growing it out isn't very fun. But you learn and the upperclass females all help too. There isn't much you can do with it Plebe Summer except clip it half up to keep it out of your face. As stated lots of regs on clips, ties, etc. Essentially match your hair and you will be fine.
 
The young lady handled it with incredible dignity and a sense of humor. She immediately gained the respect of her classmates and detailers and built on it throughout Plebe Summer. (She was in the same Company as DD)
 
The sense of humor is key. She has a great story for her alumni years. It was not intentional or malicious, just a classic comms mix-up.
 
I have hearsay only from a detailer who was there in the area. In the hectic production-line atmosphere of the haircut area, someone directed female plebe to the male haircut line. The barber went to work, buzzing away. The people who should have noticed, didn't. My guess is the plebe perhaps already had short hair and a young face devoid of any make-up. No excuse, just a possible reason.

I don't fault the plebe for not speaking up in the I-Day atmosphere, but I bet she will have learned something from that experience. I predict she will be a superb detailer if she gets the chance, because she will understand all too well how mistakes get made in the fog of war...er...training environment.
