I am hearing a lot about BGOs being the one to help candidates/applicants with the process. I'm not eligible to apply yet, nor is the applications for the Class of 2022 open; but, I read on one of the forums that Candidate Visit Weekends are being offered to juniors (which I am currently). How would I approach my BGO? And how can I be offered to the CVW? Thanks!

Your BGO is accessible by contacting the area coordinator...area coordinators are listed on the USNA Admissions website. I don't really recommend asking for a CVW at this point since you should apply for NASS first. If not offered NASS, then it might make sense to ask. Ultimately, it is up to your Admissions Counselor (via your BGO) to extend an invitation and there is PLENTY of time.

I am not sure exactly why some juniors are being offered it early...but it might have to do with applying to and/or attending STEM or being on some mailing list. I really wouldn't worry that some juniors are being offered.

When are juniors usually offered CVWs?

Typically from the time NASS decisions are made and through the following year. Supposedly, candidates are only to be offered NASS or CVW, not both. Sometimes there are errors and sometimes a CVW might be offered, in addition to NASS, for extremely competitive candidates that are on the fence with a decision to accept an appointment (or who have an LOA). Again, there is PLENTY of time (almost a whole year) from when NASS decisions are released to attend a CVW. It only use to be that seniors were offered CVWs...then it became juniors in the spring (after they opened a NASS application)...apparently, now it is happening before NASS applications.

It sounds like admissions screens some NASS applications (the ones not selected to attend NASS) for CVWs...which is why I say to wait. It is possible to be offered either/or in the spring.

My DD had applied for the summer stem program both her freshman and sophomore years (and she was not offered a spot either year). She was offered a CVW the fall of her junior year, but could not attend due to sports. She was offered another CVW in February of her junior year, which she attended.

I suspect it was her stem applications that triggered the CVW early in her junior year.

Do you know if there is anything else that can trigger CVWs?

I was offered at CVW as a Junior in mid November. I was already in the system because I applied for (& was denied) STEM. A family friend is an admissions coordinator so we talked with him about getting one as well.

Same situation for my DS.. Except he attended STEM. He will be attending the OCT 13-15 CVW.

BGOs are the official representatives of the USNA Admissions Office. If you are having trouble finding out who your area coordinator is then do not hesitate to call Admissions for the contact info. The staff is super nice and very helpful.

I received my CVW invitation about 2 weeks after I submitted my NASS application, and then I got accepted to NASS after just before my CVW.

I'm not sure if I was considered extremely competitive, or if there was an error or not, or if it was something else. I enjoyed both experiences immensely, as they both offered different perspectives of the Academy. I'm glad to have had the opportunity to attend them. :D

Having been offered an LoA, several CVWs and having attended NASS as well as the Naval Academy Summer STEM program, I will share what I have noticed from the perspective of a Hopeful Candidate.

The way I believe the admissions office is behaving is that they would like to expose as many candidates with potential in the Academy.

That being said, I received CVWs all throughout my first semester of Junior Year (I had attended the STEM camp and therefore, they had a preliminary look at who I was). After applying to NASS and getting accepted, these CVW requests went away.

Good luck to all Hopefuls and please feel free to PM me if you have any questions!
