ACT score

DS has taken the ACT twice. Second time around his composite score dropped from 31 to 30. BUT... His science and math scores both went up. Math went from 28 to 33, and science from 27 to 28. English went from 34 to 30, and reading dropped from 33 to 29. Wondering if he would be better off using his second scores even though the composite is lower. Looking at either Air Force or Army ROTC with an engineering major.
 
The army will super score between tests and the priority is for English and math. Send both.

AFrotc works differently and take best sitting. Suggest you search Pima posts for her very good breakdown of the Air Force procedure.

Also shows that taking these tests multiple times is no guarantee of always getting higher scores. Scores could go up as well as down. It would be unusual to get outstanding scores on SAT/ACT tests if you have just average grades since these tests measure general knowledge learned all through h.s.

Based on these numbers you reported here, for Army he would have a composite score of 32 by super scoring (as said above AF will take a single sitting). This is a very competitive score for an Army ROTC scholarship. So sending in both scores is important. On another note, depending on the school that he is applying for engineering, my non ROTC daughter is applying to a direct entry engineering school (means apply to the school of engineering within the university as a freshman not a junior), and they care less about the composite and more about the math score, just an FYI. She wishes now she would of retaken it as the school of engineering could really care less about her 30 and 31 in English and Reading, but her 27 in math might be a problem. Hopefully she should know soon early decision and will have time to retake and re-apply later if needed. Stressful stuff, standardized tests, definitely NOT my favorite thing! Good luck to your son, what schools does he plan to apply to?
 
As a previous poster stated, a 31 ACT makes him very competitive for an AROTC scholarship. The University of Alabama offers 2/3 of out of state tuition with that score. In addition, students who declare an engineering major can apply for an additional $2500 per year from the College of Engineering. Here's the best part: Alabama allows stacking. If he gets an ROTC scholarship, he can pay tuition with that. Then the university will REFUND the overage to him and he can pay for room and board with that. Seriously. His first choice right now is Clemson. Also applying to penn state and University of Virginia. I'm a little concerned for AFROTC that although his composite for best sitting was good his math was weak. His math was great second time around. Will definitely send both scores in for Army.
