I am registering for the SAT November. Now that the essay is optional, does the Naval Academy or Military Academy require the essay?

Out of curiosity, why do they require the essay if you take the SAT but it is not even an option for those that take the ACT and (at least usna) only reviews the Math and English sections of the ACT.

And if both schools require the SAT writing section - can you cite where you found it?

I am not disputing your statement, it is just helpful to know the source document.

My DD is usna 2020 so it is more out of curiosity

ACT also has an "optional" essay. DD opted for the essay twice, even though, at that time USAFA did not require it.

Additionally, for USMA, AFA and USNA, if you have already taken the writing section either before on the SAT or on the ACT, do you need to take it each time you take the SAT or ACT again?

I just tried to find the requirement on the general admissions page; not listed, however, my 2021 applicant has both portals open, and both USMA and USNA ask for the optional writing portion of either SAT or ACT. I am not sure what USNA does with it. Our understanding from a USMA admissions briefing is that USMA has access to the essays and may have them reviewed by the English Department. Just speculating, but they may want to see a proctored essay, as kids can, and should, polish the essay on the application to perfection, and will (and should) have outside editing help. Hopefully, the help does not overstep, but I imagine it can happen.

I am not sure about whether you have to take it each time. Both places superscore, so if you are happy with writing, I would think you could skip it, but we have not tried to send a score without writing. I am sure the admissions office could clear that up. Seems like a reasonable question to ask them.
