Parents are hearing reports and seeing the video from Baltimore TV stations regarding the severe flooding in DTA streets and businesses yesterday. Was the Yard flooded as well, since it is so close to DTA? Did the MARSOT screening go on as scheduled?

WRT DTA flooding, that is a sadly normal occurrence with heavy rain over extended periods, high tides, full moons and storm (hurricane, nor'easter) surge. Pick any two of the above, and the water comes up over the low breakwater at Ego Alley (where Alex Haley's statue is). It usually just goes into the businesses along Dock St., which is why they have brick, concrete or stone floors, with a sandbag pile ready to deploy. There is simply nowhere for the water to go when storm drains into the Chesapeake are blocked by high water in the harbor.

The Yard has low-lying areas that get flooded, usually over by the Columbarium, near the footbridge behind the library, and along the quay walls facing the harbor.

Usually scheduled outdoor training goes unless there is lightning, extreme heat or extreme cold. I always think Marines are secretly happy when it's nasty weather for training, rather like the Green Bay Packers playing at home while it's snowing heavily.

See below photo of Alex Haley statue during the worst flooding of recent memory during Hurricane Isabel in 2003.

I realized by posting that I created a bit of a shock - that was a "100-year-flood" moment. Usually, Alex's toes just get a dip. Depending on how close the water is to his feet, is how Annapolitans tell how high the water might get elsewhere. That 2003 floodwater went up Main St., and filled the basements of the USNA academic halls on that side of the Yard. The Severn River reclaimed all her lost riverbed for two days. All those flat playing fields next to the water? Landfill.

I'm still searching for a famous photo of Alex with an orange life vest on when the water was at his knees.

Begging pardon for wandering off on a tangent, while searching for the elusive Alex in a life vest during flooding photo, I came across this 1908 photo of the back of Bancroft Hall at USNA, the side that faces the Bay/Annapolis Harbor. That's the natural shore. Now, there are Wings 7 and 8, King Hall extension, Mitscher Hall, football practice fields, etc. All landfill.

1. The yard didn't get flooded. DTA wasnt that bad. The only part that was actually flooded and blocked off was right next to City Dock(flooding started after Mission BBQ, only got bad after Starbucks. There was definitely a distinct rise in water level along the seawalls on the yard, but nothing actually spilled over.

2. The MARSOT screener went on during the planned times, but was slightly modified. Due to the downpours and consistent showers throughout the morning, the O-course segment was canceled.

@ Capt MJ Your photo from 2003 brings back memories of people riding jet skis and using various boats to get around DTA! Why is that if there is a TS/hurricane name with an "I" (Isabelle/Irene), DTA gets flooded? Hurricane Matthew could lose a lot of steam before coming the eastern seaboard, but who knows at this point. DTA has the sail boat show this weekend and power boat coming shortly thereafter, hopefully not much will come of this storm.

We have sponsor alumni at Nuke School in Charleston evacuating to our house, since the current model shows minimal impact on Annapolis.

I had just started a new job in DTA a month earlier, and the office was flooded up to 22". Fried every outlet. We had unhooked computers and peripherals and carried upstairs, where the server was. Wet carpet and nasty mold and mildew going up the walls.

Just returned from 2C parents weekend. Even with a rainy game against Houston, no flooding or damage was seen on the yard. All appears well.
