Everyone,

I just wanted to say thanks. I have read along on this forum and have never posted until now. My DS is hoping for an appointment and is all done with his app, medical (CPR) and we await the interview process with our MOC's. DS is listed as a recruit for a sport (whatever that means) on his app according to the coach who he talks to regularly (recently spent CVW with a team member too) but no offer yet for the team. DS wants USNA whether he is asked to be on the team or not so onward we push.

The bottom line is I wanted to say thank you for many of you who take your time to answer so many questions from all of us going through this process. I am sure there are many like me who don't feel the need to post because we can search the forum and find our answer. CaptMJ, Navyhoops, MurftheSurf and MANY more it is appreciated. I look forward to my DS hopefully being a part of such a great community. Good Luck to everyone.

Navydad70,

Best of luck to your DS on his quest.

For what it's worth, I failed in my attempt to enter USNA directly from HS.

I enlisted in the USN fully intending to apply for USNA via NAPS from the enlisted side of the house. While it's a crap shoot, it worked for me. I was a better Marine Officer because I spent time as a Bjuejacket chipping paint, swabbing decks, and sounding bilges. I wouldn't trade my enlisted USN experience for the world! My appointment chances from the fleet were actually better and I didn't spend $20K on freshman college tuition.

Make sure your DS explores ALL his options, especially as an athlete.

Grilled Cheese,

First, Thank you for your service!

Good advice, and we have plan B,C, and D ready to go. He has applied for NROTC scholarship and we are waiting to go to officer interview for that. He has been accepted to two academic schools that he was interested in and he has 4 offers to play his sport at other schools, interestingly two of those offers were from schools that were at the Navy camp he went to (USMMA is one). He first choice is USNA and would jump at the chance for NAPS too. As a proud mom and dad we are just thrilled that he is focused on serving his country no matter how or where it takes him. It is a great time for our family and we are enjoying the ride.

My DS is a Junior in HS this year and will be applying to the USNA and for NROTC Scholarships (he wants to be an Officer in the Marine Corps). You mentioned NAPS; I am aware of this program, but was curious - do you apply for it or are you referred there if you meet qualifications but don't get accept to the USNA? Any light you can shed on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Back in the day, NAPS was a consideration if you didn't pass muster on initial appointment consideration.

Please research this in depth relative to modern convention. I was USNA Class of '94 coming from the enlisted Navy in '87...a LONG time ago in a peacetime Navy & Marine Corps.

Naps is additional preparation to be ready for the rigors of the academics. Many are recruited athletes the coaches want but they aren't quite where they need to be academically (either GPA or test scores).

Sorry DaGrubs, I left off part of the answer, you do not apply separately, if they determine it to be the best path they will offer it.
