Mids Store

There are 2 different stores on the Yard, but only one of them is open to the public. If you don't yet attend USNA, you (or your parents) can't shop there. You have to show your USNA ID card when checking out.

I'm talking about the one within Bancroft. During my CVW last year it was open. Home game, but no parent weekend. Just wanted to make sure the same would apply. Thanks.

Yes you could use the Mid Store during your CVW because you had a Mid as your escort. You won't be able to check out without a Mid or Alumni (who has a shopping card) and shows their ID (or is in uniform).

I used it without a Mid last time. They never asked for any ID. I went with my father after my Mid dropped me off. Just wanted to know because we are thinking about visiting next weekend.

I think it depends on your cashier. The people who had gone about an hour before us had no problem (parents during CVW) but our cashier was very reluctant to ring us up (we did not have our son or a mid with us, but were there during CVW with him.) Be prepared for it to go either way.

Have had cashier check Mid Parent ID on some occasions and on others just went through the line with no questions. I agree it can go either way but it helps if they are busy and the line is long!

I tried to shop at the Mid Store after graduation, and was rebuffed even with my military ID.

It was a weird feeling to not be allowed to shop at the Mid Store. Had to go back and specifically find my Alumni gold card.

It really depends on how much the cashier cares about the rules.

That is weird. I agree though. I check out at the NEX with no ID check all the time. I mean, most white young men in Japan with short haircuts are military...

The Mid Store ("Midstrom's" ;)) is a special set-up, with profits going into the USNA MWR Fund instead of back to Big Navy/Big USMC MWR, as regular NEX and MCX stores do. That's how big stars are brought in for Brigade Concerts and other nice things not supported by appropriated funds (taxpayer dollars) get covered. Though it uses the NEX system for purchasing, eligibility to use it is as noted by other posters. Many MidStore users who would not be eligible to shop at NEX, MCX or AAFES (assuming they do not have the right ID, though some will), such as civilian faculty, summer campers, civilian staff, parents, even USNA grads who no longer have a military ID, may shop at the Mid Store. It's the cash cow that underwrites very nice things and events for the Brigade.

As a non-grad of USNA, I could use the Mid Store when I was on staff for duty. Despite my ID card, I cannot shop there now in my own right, but get a pass due to DH being a grad. It's an anomaly that is part of Yard Magic, not found elsewhere.

For ID-card holders reading this who don't know the area, there is a very nice, relatively new NEX and Commissary across the Naval Academy Bridge at NSA Annapolis, and an even larger new AAFES/Commissary at Ft. Meade, 20 miles away. All the normal access rules apply there. Gas stations, car washes, Class VI Store/Quick Stop, all the usual stuff. NSA Annapolis facilities are outside security gate, Ft. Meade facilities inside.

and an even larger new AAFES/Commissary at Ft. Meade,

Why is it that AAFES exchanges and commissaries are always larger, newer and nicer than Navy/USMC equivalents??:D

And then there is MCX Henderson Hall, on JB Myer-Henderson Hall, where the international diplomatic corps shops, and Burberry et al brands make you think you have landed on a retail planet far outside the military galaxy.

When visiting your Mid have them make reservations at the Navy Lodge across the river. Lots cheaper than DTA and across from NEX and Commissary. Have used them at USNA and Quantico and they are great. Get the reservations early. We always had better AF Golf Courses although Quantico looks nice along the access road.
