Best wishes to all the USCGA hopefuls!

Yes, good luck to all potential shipmates! When anyone gets an acceptance, please share the good news with us all... and possibly when the application was submitted (so we can sort of guess when we're up next ) It'll be exciting to hear from the very first one, regardless of who it is. GO BEARS!

You can also keep an eye on National Letter of Intent to see who is being recruited from a sports perspective- the NLI early signing is Nov 9th - Nov 16th and high schools usually publish the information. It can show accepted CGA EA appointment offers that may not make the forum.

Where do you go for that information? Not very familiar with that stuff. Any links?

If you do a web search via Google for terms like "sport signing day coast guard", "letter of intent coast guard" etc. any high schools that have reported their signers will come up. You can even add your state to the search to limit it to ones of interest.

My son got his Medically Qualified letter from DoDMERB in the mail today ... His application was submitted on 9/3/2016 ... it took until 10/10/2016 to get his final required letter from a teacher submitted ... he is currently in the Cadet Candidate Evaluation Board Review pending status ... not sure how long this will take - he does have a Letter of Assurance as well

Did you get your LOA a few weeks ago when the admissions officers asked for transcript, resume, extracurriculars, leadership, etc? DS got a phone call asking for those items to be given to admissions officer's CAPT. but haven't heard anything since. DS submitted app on 10/10 and it also says ready for review.

His is actually dated 8/17/2016 ... he got it before the app process opened i think ... then he was told to submit with the early decision group

Just out of curiosity, are all recruited athletes going EA then? Do you have to be committed, or do you still have the option to turn them down?

Again, out of pure curiosity, do you still sign Letter of Intent for service academies? If you're being recruited, is it usually verbal or do you actually get something in writing? I'm really not educated on the whole athletic recruitment scene and just want to educate myself.

i would guess only those with an LoA are expected to go EA ... unless their application is as good as its going to be academic rockstars with great community service and leadership credentials (thats kind of how Admissions has phrased who should apply for EA the sessions we have attended) - i actually just spoke to his coach - he will send a NLI for him to sign at school during the NLI Week Signing Ceremony - but most of what we did was verbal and a handshake. this was quite refreshing because i have spoken with many coaches (i have helped and trained young athletes for @ 9yrs) and the cga coach was one of the few i felt that i could believe that the best interests of my child as a student athlete came first

Oh, so you can be a recruited athlete and not get LOA? I thought if you're recruited, you're pretty much in and that it was just a matter of submitting your application for formality. This is all new and very interesting as my kids is DEFINITELY not a recruited athlete. Hahaha... I didn't realize CGA has signing too. I thought it was only for civilian schools since there's no scholarship involved. So, after signing, what happens if you want to break it? Are you penalized in any way? Again, it really has nothing to do with us, but just curious since I know some younger kids who are interested and may become future recruits. Thanks for the insight!

My understanding is that there are less than 35 LoA's given out (that's what his letter states) ... they are give for athletics and for targeted exceptional candidates - i am not sure how they are divided. As far as the NLI - in our case its more ceremonial and i dont know the implications of changing as my son plans on attending - actually just found this -
Recently the NCAA Division III membership voted to approve the use of a “non-binding standardized celebratory form” which can be signed by a prospect after the prospect has been accepted to a Division III institution. While the use of the form will be optional, only a standardized form provided by the NCAA will be permissible for a “signing ceremony.”

The “non-binding celebratory form” was recommended and approved because of the increasing popularity of signing ceremonies at high schools when prospects sign a National Letter of Intent or athletic scholarship agreement with an NCAA Division I or II university on their “signing day.” Because Division III colleges don’t offer athletic scholarships, Division III recruits were often left to sign only a blank piece of paper, or an admission agreement with the Division III institution.

This form gives prospects the ability to celebrate their admittance to a Division III institution while continuing their education and participation in collegiate athletics.

The celebratory signing form below is produced and sponsored by the NCAA. The NCAA still does not allow anyone associated with the Institution to plan, arrange or attend a prospective student-athlete's signing day. All the Institution is permitted to do is provide the form to a prospective student-athlete.

We did the "handshake" commitment with the coach at CGA. Should we have asked for an LOA? He had my son submit EA and we are currently waiting to go to the DoDMERB appointment. How long after the appointment does it take to get the letter that says you are medically eligible?

I don't think you ask for an LOA. I also don't think any of this is needed.

It's D3. The thought of signing is comical to me.

Just enjoy being accepted and get ready for the real "fun."

i guess the letter signing ceremony kind of serves 2 purposes - one it allows the student athlete that chooses a d3 school over a d1/d2 school for whatever reason to be recognized in their high school and community for their hard work and excellence in their sport. It also works as a recruiting and promotional tool for the colleges - i actually was not aware that places like USCGA and Kings Point (didn't even know KP existed) had teams that compete in the NCAA until my son came home from a trip and said he had changed his goal from USNA to USCGA.

Hoping my DS can leverage the athletic route as well as the academic one (and all the other required merits). He's varsity XC and team captain and runs each year in the state championship. There are a lot of great kids applying to the USCGA as well as the other MA's. I wish everyone the best of luck, it's a huge achievement if you get an appointment. Hoping for C/O 2021.

Have had one kid sign for D1 and his close buddy was D3 and the high school decided to include the D3 athletes in the last signing day. Most were from minor sports that don't often get the recognition that football, basketball, baseball, wrestling, soccer get. It was as much for the golf, swimming, bowling, crew, tennis programs/coaches as it was for the kid and his parents.

I'm gonna add mine. Good luck to you all! My DD made a recruiting visit to the USCGA during last years cycle. To avoid a second trip across county to visit the USCGA, we drove up to campus after a visit to Yale. The impromptu visit left me with a group of cadets from the Crew team, while my DD spent about 90 mins with the coach. I was really, really impressed with the USCGA Cadets (sorry if Cadet is the wrong term).

DD ended up at the USNA, but boy we sure liked the people we met and that great campus. Best to you all. My DD is still trying to get her best bud from her Crew team in Seattle to apply to the USCGA.

"I shall sell life dearly to an enemy of my country, but give it freely to rescue those in peril". ------best line from any creed, ever!

Yeah, we had the same experience when we visited. We made two trips. Luckily for us, I grew up in RI so a stop at the USCGA is on our way when we visit my family. Everyone there is so nice and really helpful. I'm hoping my DS ends up there, as it is the first choice for him followed by the USNA and USAFA. I'm hoping with his SAT scores that came out today, his chances have gone up. He only has three XC meets left and they are all the championships (Conference, County, and States) and then his HS XC career is over. Kind of sad in a way. I've really enjoyed attending the meets and invitationals. My DD is following her brothers footsteps so I have 4 more years :)
