Nail in the coffin?

Sadly, I recieved that dreadful letter in the mail today - "I regret to inform you that we will not be able to offer you a place in the entering class for the USMA this year." So my question is- and I believe I already know the answer- Is this the nail in the coffin? Or do I still have some snowball's chance in h*** to still be admitted into the class as a fill in? (I know it depends on the list ranking- I'm somewhere close- with in the next 150 outside the 1285)
I believe that I don't really have a chance at all especially because this year- kids are not declining offers to USMA like they were last year (usually 100+ decline- this year its down a lot)
However, I am definately going to apply next year to the class of 2014 and this is where my other questions come in.
What is the re-application process like?

What do I have to do again/not do again?

Do they keep my file and just move it along into the next applying class section?

Anyway, I'm disappointed for this year, but I am going to a great college in the fall and to one of the best ROTC battalions out there with a full scholarship. As I have stated previously- I'm applying again for the class of 2014 and hopefully everything will turn out great! But, for all those kids out there who also didn't get in this year- I say don't give up!! If you really want it and you keep trying, then you are bound to get in!
Goodluck future class of 2013! Atleast I get a summer break now :D!!

I would say that you are done for the class of 2013, Keep in mind that a full 1/3 of each entering class is post high school. Find out what your weaknesses were in your application and try to strengthen them for next year. My own son is currently a plebe and got in on he second try, his best friend did not get in on his first try and went to college on an AROTC scholarship and will be reporting in June to become part of the class of 2013. If it is what you want keep trying.

you have to do everything over agian to reapply

I am so sorry you didn't make it on your first try.
I will try and answer some of your questions - I would suggest that you get in touch with your MALO or Regional Commander. Talk about your file and what your weaknesses were and try and work on those. Let them know that you have not given up and you are applying again.

You will essentially have to do the application over. It is easier the second time though! Go ahead and arrange to have your high school final transcripts send to admissions, then they will have them.
Contact your MOC's - sometimes they just have you update your applications instead of redoing all the essays etc. Your MOC may or may not want to re-interview you. If you are far away at school you will probably have a phone interview.
Plan on re-taking your SATs/ACTs - even if going to college. This will only help you.

It is fantastic that you have a scholarship and will be doing ROTC. This is seen as a huge plus as you will have a great introduction to the Army.
You also will be eligible for a ROTC nomination.

Lots of cadets did not get in on their first try. About 30% of the class does NOT come straight from high school.
Talk to your Regional Commander but I suggest you take courses that mimic plebe year, i.e. English, History, Chemistry and Math. Other courses that will be helpful are Psychology and/or a foreign language.
For Math re-take the highest math you took in high school.

Good Luck!

PS - Do you have it memorized? "twas brillig and the slithey toves......."

".....Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe."

Ok thanks for the replies guys- I've talked to my regional commander previously- and I actually found out over the last weekend that I didn't make it- he said my leadership was borderline- but I don't understand that- considering I'm in literally 100 afterschool activities- those including NHS, I'm VP of my class, I'm an eagle scout- Also have been SPL of my scout troop for some time, and have been involved in scouts since 5th grade. I went to boys' state- and although I already had a presidential nomination- I still competed in my congressional district and was my congressman's 1st choice out of 22 other kids. Also- with respect to those afterschool clubs- I'm president of a lot of them, or at least some type of officer. I could have been captain of my HS's Cross-country team but I never really thought about it at the beginning of the year- we never designated any captains in the past- all the seniors just act as leaders more or less- I wish I knew what I know now!

He also said some stuff about my SAT scores- I got math: 650 CR: 600 writing: 640 and I know they're not that great or outstanding- I thought I did alright(And I took them 5 times!). I have a 95 gpa and am in the top 15% of my class.
I also scored in the top 20% out of everyone apparently on the CFA.

I don’t know- I tried my best- and I will definitely try even harder when applying for next year’s class. MY Regional Commander said that this year was by far the most competitive year they have ever had at USMA- I just hope that’s true and he doesn't just say that to everyone :shake:. But those darn SATs sheesh!! I thought I was done with that test! But if taking it again means improving my chances then I will definitely take them again, regrettably- haha.

Thanks for all the feedback guys I really appreciate it!

The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!" :shake:

About 30% of the class does NOT come straight from high school.

JAM - do you know what percentage of that 30% are 1st time applicants as opposed to those who are reapplying after a rejection?

(my curiosity only, no bearing on the OP's question)

Have you thought about attending as a "free agent" at one of the prep schools (ie, Northwestern Prep)....from what I understand they have a 90%+ success ratio in getting kids into the academies.

Luigi - I really don't know but.....the real question should be what percent of qualified 2nd timers get an appointment.

Jaberwocky - perhaps you should pursue this question with admissions.
Your SAT's actually are not bad. You might want to consider taking them one more time - talk to your RC about this and take his advice.

A Regional Commander did tell me that West Point really values 2nd timers. It adds to the application that you are applying again. The vast majority of QNS candidates do not reapply.

Ohiowrestler - are you thinking of attending NWP for a West Point appointment?

For everyone that has applied and got "the letter" thank you for all you want to give and DO NOT give up. You young people are all wonderful and I am so proud of all of YOU!!! What a special bunch I wish all the SA's could accept the 3Q's into the SA of their choice.

I am a junior in high school and will be attending both SLS & NASS. I am hoping to receive an appt to either academy. If not, my plan B will be to attend a prep school for 1 year and re-apply. Has anyone else on this forum went this direction??? I have heard that several prep schools (include NW prep) have very high admisison rates into the academies. Has anyone else heard this??
thanks

Yeah, it sounds like you're done for this year. You will need to find out which areas are lacking. Leadership will most likely be hard in college since freshmen don't really receive leadership positions so you might want to look into community activities you could lead.

Army ROTC = Uber Leadership. In the eyes of admissions.

If a college student take AROTC - has a scholarship so they do ALL the labs, not just show up for class - that counts. a lot.
