Looking to book our room for R-Day. We normally stay on points with the Hilton brands, but do not have enough for a reward reservation at this time. I was shocked to see how much the hilton hotels were going for in the area. So, I need a recommendation for one of the smaller, non-chain hotels/motels in the area. Any ideas?? Priorities would be cleanliness, of course, and non-smoking rooms. Proximity would be nice, but willing to drive a little if need be.
Thanks!

Nevermind.....I checked the cga website and there was a list of hotels offering discounts and the hilton garden inn was one of them. yay.

Then again, if anyone knows of a super clean hotel that can beat 98.00 a night, please feel free to let me know.

Check the online hotel sites..I booked the Radisson at $72 plus tax for a visit in April:wink:

The Radisson is probably the nicest of the chain hotels in new London but it's all the way downtown, not within walking distance (not important on R-day).

The Holiday Inn is nice and it's close, the Red Rash Inn (I mean Red Roof Inn) is also close, as is the Hilton Garden Inn.

I've stayed at all 4 and have had no problems with any of them.

I think during AIM last year my hubby and Joyce stayed at a Hampton inn in Groton.n(expensive too).. I always stay at hilton hotels for travel.. but I didnt have the points at the time (since we USED them in April when I took the kids to D-LAND!).. Shellz I guess we should of found each other before! :)

Last year during Parents Weekend we splurged and stayed at the Marriott Mytic Hotel off exit 88. It's kind of salty but with a Captain Kirk price chop I received a room for 166. One perk was that it had a great Steak Restaurant down stairs, not too busy, when half the regiment's families are standing in line over at the Outback steak house next to the Holiday Inn in New London.

During Parent's Weekend, it seems like EVERY restaurant in Mystic has a 2-hour wait and there is no parking anywhere.

Next year we'll either head to New Haven or Providence to spend Saturday evening and Sunday. No need to stay really close by.

Or perhaps the tables at Mohegan Sun will sing their irresistible siren song.

Cadets are eligible to reserve rooms at the Navy Lodge in Groton...they book up well in advance, but it's $70/night and very nice for the price.

Would he be considered a Cadet before Rday? We are coming in on Sat. night prior to Rday.....

Thanks Objee, Luigi and all of the helpful posters. I am really liking this extended CG family thing. You all have been so kind over the past 18 months. If you all are indicative of the folks at CGA and in the CG, then my boy is headed to a good place, I can tell.

Unfortunately, he won't be eligible until he's on active duty (post R-Day) but it's worth checking for future, especially off-peak, visits!

That's what I guessed. If we come to visit, can we stay there as his guest, or would he actually need to stay there as well? Again, I am guessing he would need to be there, but all this is so new....

Thanks

Guests of military personnel may stay at Navy Lodges provided the military member is present at check-in.

Yay! Saving money is nice. We have Navy friends who would always stay at the Navy lodge on Coronado every summer. Loved going down there for the day to play on the beach. Was so jealous of the incredible location and the rather inexpensive price. It's a nice perk for those willing to serve.

Just wait until your son finds out he can stay in New York City (in Mid-town Manhattan!) for $25 at the Soldiers', Sailors', Marines', Coast Guard and Airmen's Club.

A few more questions now...

I have looked at the discounted hotels on CGA's website: if a hotel is in downtown New London or Groton or Mystic, is that sufficiently close for an early R-day check-in?
Also, I cannot seem to locate whether there is a weekend in August between SWAB summer and classes when parents come? or am I thinking of Mystic flag ceremony? In other words, what dates should I consider besides R-day and Parents weekend? My son has accepted, but we do not have all the r-day info yet, but we need to work on schedules on our end. Thanks.

Yes, no problem.

Mystic will probably be on July 25th. As long as your swab is not being transported to EAGLE (sometimes A/B/C companies do not attend Mystic, last year they did) it is the first day you will actually get to see them and talk to them for a few hours.

And depending on how far away you are, you can probably see your swab for a few hours when they get their shoulder boards in mid-August, but that exact date can vary.

Parent's Weekend is 25-27 September 2009.

Do not stay at Red Roof. I won't say why, but it doesn't have the greatest reputation at CGA...

Thanks for the info. Hope to be at Parents Weekend for sure, but would like to consider one of the July/August possibilities. How soon do you think they know the mid-August date? Is getting shoulder-boards a nice ceremony? What is the general policy for getting to visit a cadet?
(Maybe all of this will be answered when we get the full-blown package, now that my son has accepted)

Once you join the Parent's Association and get access to the Class of 2013 board (and all the other class boards as well if you wish) you will have access to a lot of good information.

Visiting during Swab Summer is tough, and not recommended. Swabs need to remain focused, distractions are not advised. They're going to be homesick enough without being reminded by a family visit.

If you are local, you can attend Sunday services at the Chapel when they do, but I don't think you are allowed to visit with your cadet (I may be wrong about that though). However, you CAN see them and sometimes that is enough to reassure you that they are being cared for and are well. (Even the "non-religious" swabs usually attend the Sunday services as they are air conditioned, no one is yelling at them for a few hours, and they usually get a donut at the conclusion.)

The shoulder board ceremony is very short, some local parents attend and take pictures and post them on the PA site so those that cannot attend can see their new 4/c with their new 4/c shoulder boards. It IS a big deal for the Swabs as they are recognized as members of the Corps of Cadets, and they are filled with a sense of accomplishment at having succesfully completed Swab Summer. Going through with their shipmates will bond them forever, they will feel great about finishing it, and they will be happy they did it, but they will NEVER want to do it again.

Once school starts, you can visit your cadet every weekend if you wish, 4/c usually get liberty after 1200 on Saturday or after their last LMO, and all day Sunday until 2200.

Of course, Semper Gumby applies at all times.
