I am very excited--I just received my official offer to NAPS! I have seen threads on here addressing a few things about NAPS, and have visited the website but information is really scarce. Could anyone give me some general insight? I am interested in finding out if all midshipman candidates make it to USNA and what that process is and mostly just about how NAPS is (uniforms, what classes we take, sports and life in Newport, etc.).

Congrats on your appointment!!! I am sure your family is very proud of you!! Did you happen to notice the postal date on the envelope? Just trying to get an idea when admissions sent out mail. I think any information at this point helps with the sanity (a little).

Again Congrats! :thumb: Thanks in advance for the information.

Postmarked 3/30 USPS priority mail, delivered to my door. I received it a little over a week ago but just now found this site. Good luck to you! Let me know if I have another classmate :)

THX for the info., and welcome to this site. We (my family) don't engage in a lot of the topics, but we have gained a lot of helpful information. I'm sure you will receive the information you need. I find that searching for certain topics from the past will help you find what you are looking for as well. Good Luck and Enjoy your family and friends before you leave.

Hi Hannah,

Congratulations. NAPS is a terrific program. My son (NAPS 07) took classes much like USNA - Calculus, Physics, Chem, English - plus professional knowledge, PT, etc. Classes are streamed in three levels (I forget the correct NAPS terms, but it's kind of remedial/standard/advanced, based on placement tests).

Can't recall precise numbers re: transitioning to USNA. Son's class began w/ something like 230, and 200 went on to USNA. The majority who didn't, left on their own, realizing military life wasn't for them. You've probably heard the NAPS expression "2.0 and go." Pass everything, keep out of trouble, get a 2.0 GPA, and you're good to go to USNA.

What else? NAPSters wear uniforms, get lots of military training from a USMC DI my son still idolizes, and have many opportunities for sports and activities. NAPS has many, though not all, of USNA's NCAA sports. I visited NAPS during "little Army/Navy" weekend, as they call football against USMA Prep -- lots of spirit and excitement.

Newport is a very active base w/ all sorts of training programs going on (senior enlisted, professionals like physicians and attorneys getting their military training, and of course the Naval War College). You'll see lots of active duty Navy at meals, in the Exchange, and elsewhere on the base.

Though the base isn't very far from the town of Newport, it's more than a walk. Parents love Newport, though it can be costly. It's small, and the NAPSters I knew were a little tired of it by the time graduation rolled around. I forget how long it is until weekend liberty begins, but my son and his friends liked to go to Providence for shopping, movies, etc.

Son felt academics were pretty rigorous. He did well and is doing well in USNA academics so far, validating Chemistry, taking a 400 level course as a 3/C, good class rank. He felt as if anyone NAPS accepted could succeed if they wanted to -- which is not to say it's easy, just doable. Extra help is always available. Faculty wants you to succeed.

As a 3/C, my son's two closest friends are still NAPSters, one a prior enlisted Marine. He would say the most valuable and rewarding part of his experience in Newport was getting to know prior enlisted NAPSters. NAPS gave him a real leg-up in plebe summer, and he learned a lot about military careers in briefings by various experts. His graduation speaker was Col. John Ripley, a USMC legend who passed away last year and was buried with highest honors @ USNA. Exposure to the history, traditions and power of the military prior to I-Day @ the Academy seemed to make that day less intimidating for him, and his NAPS friends. Not their mothers, though! When the F-18s practically scraped the roof of Bancroft to welcome assembled plebes into the real deal, I dissolved. Tell your parents to bring tissues to everything related to your education, starting right now.

Hope this helps. Pls let me know if I can answer questions.
I suspect there's a former NAPSter out there who will gladly correct my mistakes and memory lapses.

Again, congratulations. Start running now!

Hey Hannah, I got appointed to NAPS too. I guess I'll be seing you in Rhode Island in a few months

Northerncalmother, thank you so much!! You've helped a ton, I'm trying to get as comfortable as possible with the idea of military life for the next five years as I can. Did your son say anything about whether or not to bring a car? And as far as liberty to go explore Newport goes, is that acquired after napsters earn it or do we get it right off? Also, what should I bring with me to indoc and what should I leave for my parents to bring at parent weekend? And finally Can you tell me about the pay situation--what napsters are paid and what fees are deducted?

I know it's a lot, it's just knowledge about NAPS is almost impossible to find!

Ten years active military lifestyle and a 3 year reserve commitment following the ten.

Hannah's questions

You (and your parents) will find some answers to questions @ http://www.usna.com/naps

NAPSters are discouraged from having cars, but some do, and park them outside the gates. My son elected to leave his @ home and had no trouble getting a ride for outings.

Re: liberty -- there's none in the summer. I believe sometime in the fall, some weekend liberty was granted to everyone -- except those w/ duty, or demerits or otherwise restricted. Also, you're becoming part of something larger than yourself, and sometimes a serious infraction on the part of one person results in penalties such as loss of liberty for all.

You'll receive a list of things to bring. Take a cell phone, which you can't use 'til summer ends but you'll want as soon as you're permitted. You won't have much storage space, so factor that into what-to-bring decisions. Also, NAPSters can access the base Exchange before long -- it's kind of like a Target w/ a wide variety of stuff, including toiletries, detergent, cleaning gear (all of which you'll need to get once the AC year begins). My son's attitude was to take nothing beyond the official list, but he's a minimalist.

Like USNA, NAPS automatically deducts fees for uniforms, books, equipment, etc. from pay. I seem to recall writing a check on NAPS I-day, but I forget the particulars. Pay is deposited into a Navy Federal Credit Union acct you'll open on I-Day. My son was encouraged to save for his $2500 entrance fee @ USNA but I think that fee was discontinued, or rolled into other loans. He was left w/ about ... $700/mo starting in the fall.

Remember: Year-to-year (as w/ USNA), everything @ NAPS is subject to change. Good luck, Hannah.

Well im up at NAPS this year, I was a prior enlisted but to be honest I would encourage bringing a car its just alot easier. You will actually have alot more liberty than you will think, You have to pay the BAC fund up here which is like 1800 I think which covers the trip to NYC and books and stuff. Plus there is a uniform bill you will have to pay, I think for those out of HS its like 700 or something. I have alot of stuff here, mostly Civi cloths and stuff but you can bring a decent amount of stuff here, your wall lockers arent the biggest but you can store a decent amount of stuff here. If you have any questions dont hesitate to ask me!

NorthernCalMother: Thanks for posting the link for the NAPS Parents. There is a lot of information out there that will help. Just a word about the uniform bill, it is not deducted from their checks. That is a nice Christmas present they will get just before that leave break.

MM3 Kim is right, there is a lot of storage room at NAPS compared to that at USNA. However, do not get fooled into thinking that you want to take everything with you on I-Day. You do not. Have it sent up to you by your parents or if you do take your vehicle, pack it in the trunk.

You will do great. Keep focused on the prize at the end...the appointment to USNA. Congratulations to those in NAPS Class of 2010.

good luck hannah! Im sure you will do great things up here! Ur gonna hate the winter though, its unlike anywhere else, well, at least compared to Colorado ha. But ur gonna have a great time. Remember to find a prior to teach u some of the tricks of the trade when u get up here! Lemme know if u have any questions

Congratulations on NAPS. Quick question...did you receive the NAPS appointment affter you received notice that you did not receive a USNA appointment or did it come before? In other words, if you receive the official thin white letter does that mean you definitely won't be offered NAPS or foundation? Thanks

I never receieved anything telling me I would not be appointed to USNA, I just got an offer to NAPS. I think that if you received the TWE without a notice that you've been put on a waitlist then there isn't any more consideration for NAPS. My BGO told me NAPSters were deemed unqualified for USNA early, and thus entered a new applicant pool for NAPS/foundation. If you got a TWE you probably were more academically qualified than me but the academy didn't see you as competitive enough quite yet. That isn't fun to hear, but I hope you'll reapply if you're asking on behalf of yourself. Maybe we will be classmates after next year.

Mm3 kim, thanks for the encouragement! It means a lot and navymom2008, there's a calendar on the NAPS website that said it's on the 29th but maybe I read it wrong?
