Lets say a kid has an offer to another academy, and is WAITING from CGA, the kid would rather wait for CGA, but obviously has to advise the other schools..

Can this kid accept the other offer, and then turn it down (after the 5/1/09 date) IF the CGA comes thru????

just a BIG honest question that I am sure others might be thinking...

im ready to accept air force academy... coast guard is losing a lot of people by taking wayy to long.. i got my air force appointment back in jan.. by now im just so fed up of waiting that if i were to get accepted to CGA, i'd decline...

thats what the wait lists are for. i ran into a similar problem when i was applying. i had CGA but was waiting on USNA. i ended up accepting CGA but planned on declining it if USNA came through.

BTW i couldnt be happier that i ended up going to CGA.

i just recieved my waitlist today and i am still waiting for USMMA to tell me where i am at.

as a waitlister, what are my chances of being offered admission?

You wait. While taking so long might lose some people, they are finding plenty of outstanding people. There is no reason to accept an academy just because you haven't heard from another one.

but if you accepted college B now, and in two weeks college A comes thru.... can you change???

and withdraw from College B so you can tell A I wanna come there.....

The answer is yes. You can accept another academy's appointment and then turn it down when the preferred academy offers an appointment.

It happens every year.

Not to sound all to overly moralistic, but is that person really the type of candidate any academy wants who accepts, signs on the dotted line and then backs out??

well if they are waitlisted.. just maybe.... I understand what you are asking...

I think once the decision by the candidate they are set. I think it is difficult for many to change thier minds, but I am sure it is done, The candidates need to follow their hearts.

If they didn't want them they wouldn't give them an appointment.

All the academies give out appointments way after the May 1st deadline so I'm sure they are all aware that things like this happen

let me try to be more speciifc....

kid accepts an appt to USZZZ on 4/24 since he is waitlisted at USQQQ.

on 5/25 he gets a call from USQQQ and is offered an appointment....

AT this point can he still reverse his decision on USZZZ ????

AND attend USQQQ???

Yes, he can. Happens every year.

What happens if a candidate accepts another offer but still is holding out for the CG

My son is "Wait Listed" at the Coast Guard Academy. One of the first things he did after he got the letter from the USCGA was to notify the Citadel (his second choice) that he is wait listed at the USCGA and that the USCGA is his first choice. His reasoning was that CItadel might also have a wait list and they should know how to handle a candidate that is wait listed at his first choice. I think he is right.

i agree... if you have to accept by some deadline and then the other academy (the one you always wanted to go to) comes through after the wait list, you'd wanna go to the academy you'd be most happy at.. it's easier to do well somewhere you REALLY WANT to be... maybe backing out doesnt look so great morally, but its for a good reason..

Please contact your Admissions Officer and officially share this decision with them...we certainly don't need to be appointing people from the wait list who are just going to decline.

yeah for sure... and most of that was just disappointment in the cga.. if i did get accepted i really would visit both and weigh out my options before making a decision..
