West Point Cadet charged

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

I just hope he wasn't set up somehow...

Time for CSI: NY.
Nope. NCIS. (or the Army equivalent)

Anyway - Cadets and Mids are young adults and human ones. They are not Saints. They do screw up and get caught. A couple of years ago a couple of Cadets were in possession, charged and found guilty.

The difference between getting into legal trouble at a SA and a civilian school is at an SA you are tried under the UCMJ. They lost their education, their career, spent time in prison, got a dishonorable discharge and lost their right to any future Federal financial aid for college.
Yet, some will still take the risk.

I think: Criminal Investigation Division "CID" for Army.

We are always praising those that apply to and get accepted to the academies. We mention their patriotism, maturity, selflessness, etc... And rightfully so. While all cadets and mids are young adults; not all young adults can be cadets or mids. There is an immediate expectation of these young adults that is quite well known to them. An expectation not required of a civilian 18-22 year old. Ignorance is definitely no excuse with a cadet. They know 100% what the rules are.

There is no sympathy whatsoever on my part for a cadet who gets caught doing drugs. None at all. Matter of fact; if they get caught doing anything illegal, I have no sympathy. Will young adults make mistakes? Most certainly. But there are a lot of mistakes they can and will make doing LEGAL things. There's no reason or excuse for them doing illegal things. Cadets are expecting, and we are giving our trust to these young adults. We're trusting them with multi-million dollar equipment as well as the lives of our other sons and daughters. If a cadet/mid is going to do illegal activities like drugs, assault, rape, etc...; then they don't have my respect or trust. Sorry to be a piss ant. But if the allegations are true; (I ALWAYS say IF; because I rarely ever trust or believe the news media); then this cadet deserves everything that comes to him. No one forced him to be there, and he was free to leave at any time. later... mike....

Yes, but that awesome TV show is NCIS

To take Christcorp one step further - I don't have any sympathy for anyone caught and convicted of being in possession of an illegal drug.

This is just one more example where a Cadet or Mid at a SA is DIFFERENT from one in ROTC. A ROTC student won't be tried in a military court. A SA cadet will.
As is always true - the higher up the ladder you go - the farther you have to fall.

Naturally, he will have due process, be provided with legal counsel. Do NOT think that just because he is a Cadet - it must be a "misunderstanding". "Misunderstandings" don't get this far without a thorough investigation. Cadets and Mids are not infallible.

From what I understand, USMMA cadets/midshipmen (depends on their location at the time, found that out from a grad at my work) are not subject to UCMJ.

As far as I can recall this is correct. Midshipmen are however under federal jurisdiction on campus. The only time that someone from KP would fall under the UCMJ would be if they did part of their sea year with a USS ship or their internship with a military unit.

There are many intricacies as to why this is the case, but the basic fact is that unlike the other service academies KP midshipmen are not on active duty.
