Mids/Mandatory Fun/Real Fun

This is a clip from a Navy basketball game halftime show, a talented group of 4th-8th grade girls doing jump rope routines. It was required attendance ("mandatory fun," "being voluntold") for some mids to meet attendance goals at the game, but watch the mids really get into the show. Amazing stuff, and also fun to watch the mids relax and have some real fun, not just mando fun.

Yep, to quote our sponsor family (just finished up dinner for 10 tonight, early Easter), "this place sucks, but it's actually a lot of fun sometimes." Last night, some of our 2/C had the plebes doing some fun and crazy stuff at 0200, a recon. Bone tired today, but grinning ear to ear. And we have 4 of them going to be kick-butt detailers this summer, looking forward to meeting the ''13's"...

You'd think they would just have to lie down for about a week after that! It's no wonder the girls are 4th-8th grade!!

I like the mids that were clapping and having fun sitting next to the two mids who looked bored out of their minds! How could you be bored watching that???

Not wanting to sound ignorant, but what do you mean by "take muster"?

"Take muster" = count noses. If x percent of 5th Batt is supposed to be there as the "duty batt" for the game, or however the mandatory attendance goal is being parceled out for the event, then a list may well be taken. Only those who are excused, such as SIQ (sick in quarters with a chit), actually on watch, on excused sports or other travel, or other excused absences, will not be expected to be there. If a midshipman is not officially excused, and is not on the muster list... well, stand by for a fry! That's if the leadership is paying attention.

Musters may not be taken, but if senior leadership notices attendance seemed light compared to the required attendance, stand by for incoming ordnance. Things get tightened up again.

Back in the day, 5th Batt indeed was the "duty batt" for several games. I and my company officers and senior enlisted leaders attended, but one time I sent two of the senior chiefs back to batt area to smoke out the slippery ones. Caught six of them watching porn movies in their room, so a double whammy with the computer being impounded for computer violations. Lots of sizzle in that fry.
