I know there are companies called alpha, delta, echo, bravo, golf, etc.
But, how are you selected for each company? Or is it random? Or height?

VMI of course! sorry i didnt state that, excellent open house program this weekend :thumb:

It's not my places seeing I'm not a cadet, but feel remotely strong in my answer. From what I've gathered through the year and through the open house was that they are arranged via height in inches. Now when I went to my open house in Feb. my RA's were in Echo Co.. Through discussions I was measured up and after telling them I was 6'3'' they said I'd either be in Alpha or Hotel Co.. One thing they did warn me about is that on your med. forms make sure where it says height in in. make sure the doctor doesn't put 6'3'' , but rather 75 in. so that there are no mishaps when they go to put you in a company. They told me a story or two about guys being 6'3'' and being put in E Co. and so on. Hope that helps a little.

BTW. Off Topic, but RVM how is your last month at VMI going and how crazy has everything been?

Im only 5"10
and i was told i'd be in Golf Company.

So, echo and delta has the shortest?

Out of the 8 Co.'s not including Band Co. I'd say E and F Co. would be the shortest companies leaving A and H the tallest.

So I guess you could look at it this way so to speak.

ABCDEFGH

and then Band Co.

Actually D&E are the two "Squat" companies while A and H are the "Trees" to use terms from the distant past (when I was a Cadet C&D were the little people while B&E were the normal humans and A&F were the goons- a couple of extra companies now have moved the curve to the right:rolleyes:). Sizing the corps is kind of an inexact science anyway- You clearly won't be in D company if you are 6'3 but by observation -you might be a 5'9" female in A company as you would be a relatively tall female. Thee's always a lot of variety in sizes no matter how they sort you initially which is why you always size the platoon before the start of a parade. The real deal: whatever company you are in will be the best company as a rat and then after that you won't care that much which company you are in unless you are a Cadre member or in the band

Beyond hectic. So excited it's comin' to an end, but what I wouldn't give for just three more days to work on my three major research papers, one presentation, one test + 1 ROTC and 2 PE finals, not to mention two PE papers, all in the next week and a half.

I can't wait for exam week. I only have three of those.

Yeah, Band Co. does seem to be the tightest on the hill... although Delta and Echo has a healthy dose of Napoleon Syndrome that seem to make them think they're the best (even though Golf Co. got Garnett-Andrews last year and is lookin' to get it this year too). Bravo has a decent amount of pride and F-Troop is just a cult.

If you're at all interested in group dynamics, companies and classes are both fascinating to observe. Especially when you combine the two. Delta '08 was a hateful, angry group in general, but Delta '09 and Delta '10 are the complete opposite. Hotel '06 was the last true Hollywood Hotel year; Hotel '07 was run by a bunch of tools who ruined the image by actually trying to get all of the PVTs to put cadre creases in their shirts. It's also funny the number of Firsts who will only pick rats from their company (guilty as charged... granted, I had a non-Band rat picked out too, til she quit on Day 3!).

At STP, who will be our form of "government" or authority? Not saying I'm going to stage a coup, but I'm just curious. I would think It would be some of the returning cadets instead of having the professors babysit us. Can anyone lend some knowledge? Also, how exactly will that work? (They escort us to class, etc.)

Sorry for the delay... I vaguely remember seeing this question when it was first posted, and I remember thinking I would come back to respond to it, but clearly I forgot.

They have a number of cadets who will serve as STP Counselors. If they're rising Firsts, many of them will be rat shopping. A few of them will inevitably be Cadre members for next year, and they'll be watching everyone to gauge the attitudes of the incoming ratmass.

There was a situation a couple summers back where an STP student cheated on an exam. He was not drummed out since he hadn't signed the Matriculation Book or received any Honor Court training, but he chose not to matriculate in the fall (at the strong encouragement of the Commandant of Cadets). This was a very wise decision since the entire Corps would have known within a week of matriculation who he was and what he had done. While this is an extreme case, it's a great example of how the decisions you make during STP will follow you.

To anyone who is going to STP, I have one piece of advice: always be mindful of your reputation. By all means, have fun! Get to know your BRs, become familiar with the facilities and layout of the Post, and ask all kinds of questions to try to prepare. But the STP Counselors will be watching you and they will form opinions based on the behavior they see. Perhaps more importantly, your future Brother Rats will be forming opinions of you. You won't make it through without them, so you don't want to burn any bridges before having a chance to cross them.

Whatever you do, do not start dating a future BR, or even flirt with them! For those with "naturally" flirty personalities, take great efforts to curb this behavior. You do NOT want to begin your cadetship with a reputation for having come to VMI for all the wrong reasons. Always be respectful to the STP Counselors, and never give up during morning PT sessions. The reputation you build during STP will last far beyond Matriculation and the Ratline.

Good luck,

Is this right?
Alpha - Bravo - Charlie - Delta - Echo - Fox - Golf - Hotel

^^^^^^

While technically F Company at VMI is Foxtrot Company, they are universally referred to as "F Troop," and I have no idea why. I imagine it has something to do with the old TV show, or, maybe they were a cavalry unit in the days when VMI had horses (a long time ago). I am speculating, as I really have no clue why they are called that.
