I know this is a bit of a broad question, but whats the deal with cross commissioning?

In recent years it has become VERY difficult; as in almost impossible.

We had a briefing from the Generals down here at the p school and someone asked that question. If I remember correctly they said they had approved six people to crosscommission, that's it. My AOC once told me that the only people approved were the ones that had a legacy in the sister service of high rank.

My friend there was one of them I guess. He went to Marine OCS last summer and he's cross commissioning this summer.

Why would people want to cross-commision? If they wanted to go another branch they should've just applied to the other academy.

A classmate of mine during our 2dig simmer went to the USN "Frogman" school. Actually I think it was called UDT.

It was a LONG summer program; I think 7 weeks; as opposed to the typical 3 weeks.

He came back 20lbs lighter and totally AMAZED by the cadre. What was the course?

BUDS. Yes, the "preliminary" to SEAL training.

Do I have to go on? On graduation day he was in navy whites...

Last I saw him he was a Captain, SEAL, and I think was headed to command the teams in VA. Or the puzzle palace. A friend in the USN said he's headed toward his stars.

Cross Commissioning also sometimes occurs when a couple who is married or to be married are members of different branches. It is a bit easier to stick together when you belong to the same branch.

I am amazed at how many people I have met who have served under more than one branch of the military. I love to hear their stories of their careers.
Sometimes they cross commission and sometimes they enlist, get out and go back under a different branch.

Wow that would be cool to go to "Frogman" training. If you could make it.

My future sponsor family has a cadet they are sponsoring that is graduating this year. He is cross commissioning into the marines. He got a pilot slot in the AF and at the time of Orientation he had not recieved a piliot slot in the Marines.

yep from what i hear, these days it's pretty hard to cross over. doable, yes. but rare and rough

Would it be totally out of line to say that it's not necessarily impossible to cross-commission into the Marines as an officer from AF or WP since it is a "less-title" branch to be in due to its toughness? or no?

I'm not quite sure what you are saying, but ANY cross commission out of USAFA is pretty tough, these days.

I think they had 40-ish people do the pre-test program for the Marines, and only a few of them completed it. I think the total number of cross-commissions was less than 10 this year (not talking -->USMC only, but to all other branches).

Class of 2007:

13: Cross-Commissioned. 5 in the Army, 5 in the Navy, and 3 in the Marines.

Ohh never mind. That's pretty tough. 13 made it through, but how many tried to transfer? I doubt more than 30 people want to get out of the usafa in any given year. Also, out of a class of 950, 28-29 are allowed to go into medical school. So technically, it is almost as tough as getting into medical school (perhaps less tough) from the academy.
I dont know, though. I would have to see all of the numbers before drawing any conclusions.

Let me clarify your medical school numbers because they are not correct. There are about 28 medical FIELD slots. That includes three nurses, three dentists, 18 doctors, and 4 slots for something else I can't remember. For the class of 2010, only 16 were endorsed for doctor slots, three applied and were endorsed for the nurse slots, and none applied for dentist. One of the 16 for doctors is GPA dependent (which will not be met and the slots will really only be 15). I am one of the 15 that received a doctor slot.

What kind of GPA do you need to compete for the medical slots? I guess I mean doctor in specific.

....I was assuming with what the air force academy admissions board clearly states- sending "up to 3% to medical school." Don't blame me for the misinformation, but thanks. And congratulations, that's such an accomplishment! How many people applied to those 16 (15) spots? and why wont that 16th spot be met? because his/her gpa is much lower than number 15 that there is no way of surpassing it and taking it away from that person?

Again- congratulations! And what do you hope to specialize in?

That includes three nurses

Hornetguy - you can go to nursing school out of the AFA? I had heard that but didn't know for sure.
How does that work? Do they go get their BSN/MSN?

3.25 is the cut off number. 3.0 is acceptable with at least a 27 on the MCAT (but don't expect any competitive osteopathic schools to take you).

We only had 17 people apply by the time applications were due. One dropped from the running because he know he couldn't get his GPA high enough. The 16th is in the same situation. Remember, we have 18 slots, we aren't even filling them all. The reason is because from the 100 or so that were interested when we were 4 digs, only 16 or so were still eligible by academics/classes/etc. I would like to specialize in Anesthesiology, but the AF will let me know my options based on needs if I go to med school.

The program allows 3 to apply and go to Vanderbilt for their BSN only.
