I am working on the b-ball throw for the CFA. Does anyone have any tips? What muscles are really utilized in the throw?

i painted lines every 10 feet for 100 feet on the road in front of my house and practiced a few times a week. my mom and dad would catch the ball for me. i think simply being comfortable with doing it will help you a lot. you'll be able to figure out a technique. i passed the cfa at sls using this method.

dont throw it like a baseball... i find that you get better results throwing like a javelin, or how a soccer goalie throws a ball. it uses a lot of ab muscles that way so work on sit ups as well.

lots of practice along with trying different techniques. its all upper body muscle groups so work shoulders, abs, lats, and chest i would think. the best method for me was to bend at the waist and extend my arm back and throw it like a catapault does. sorta off the wall example but it works.

we used a volleyball net to encourage loft and it seemed to help. This was coupled with the distance markers noted in a earlier post. In turn seemed to be a winning combination. You may notice as you go from the CBT to the APFT there is no BB throw. Not to imply that it is not important, it is but don't compromise the other events just to max out this one

I can max the sit-ups and push-ups, get above average for the mile and shuttle, am working on pull-ups and b-ball throw. The problem is I am a petite girl, and my hands are really small compared to a men's basketball, so the ball keeps rolling off my fingers.

vampsoul - check the CFA instruction packet and see if it specifies which size basketball is required, you may be able to use a women's.

Sorry I was just cruising the forums but I as well have a very little hand (I am also a petite girl) and I had to learn to stop flinging my arm and more push through the ball while throwing it. If I didn't it would end up having a back spin and would not travel as far. But just keep practicing and try to not fling it when throwing it kind of feels like a soccer throw-in for me :)- GOOD LUCK!

Obviously practice is the most beneficial thing you can do. However in the course of my practice and the actual test I noticed that if I tried throwing it at a higher angle I did much better. Namely because a 45 degree angle is the optimal angle to throw the ball. When you're practicing take that into consideration and try to find what works best for you.

Having a friend to get the ball and throw back to you is also nice.

Yeah, I noticed that a few days ago when I was practicing. (I practice with my gym teacher, and he gets the ball )
