Is there a shooting range at the academy open to all cadets? I got a 40 calliber hand gun as a graduation gift and was wondering if, at some point, I will be able to use it at the academy. If there is a range, would I be allowed to keep my gun there?

There's a LOT of things you will need to determine:

a. What are the military's rules re: firearms ownership?
b. Are cadets allowed to own firearms?
c. IF you are allowed to own a firearm, will it be stored in the base armory; and if so, what is your access to it?

There's a bunch of things to learn in this area and unfortunately I don't know them. I'll ask some questions on Monday to see if I can find out anything.

This would be something that Raimius could answer for you, since he is on one of the shooting teams at USAFA. You may have to wait for a while, though, since most of the USAFA cadets will be busy for the summer.
Today is the first day of summer period one at USAFA, so cadets are starting their summer programs. Those who are going to bases around the world are on their way there, and those who are cadre are getting their first day of instruction done. My son is up in the mountains of Colorado teaching the 2012s how to make a fire without matches, and which parts of the bunny are best to eat first. :thumb:

yes there's a range. dont think you can use it for personal use though, unless you're on a shooting team..

and yes you can own firearms, but you cant store them on base, the armory wont keep them. so you have to leave them somewhere else.

There is some uncertainty, at the moment. Cadet armory procedures are likely changing this year (long story).

Most of the time, the base range is off-limits for non-official training. If we can get the Small Arms Club back to normal operations, cadets will be able to use their personal firearms at CATM, during Club shoots. Whether that will happen soon, or at all, I don't know. The Club and Combat Shooting Team operations are currently suspended. We are working on getting things working again, but some things are out of our hands, right now.

The Cadet Armory is a real pain to access (probably not likely to change, IMO). I would recommend storing any personal firearms at a sponsor's house or a storage facility off base. I currently share a storage locker off base, for the specific purpose of storing our firearms.

There are several ranges not far from the academy, so I would recommend those (there are some private ranges, and public ranges at Mt. Herman and near Garden of the Gods. Myself or the Combat Shooting Team CIC will probably send a wing-wide email shortly after getting authorization to use the armory and range again.

I know you said "at some point" but it has to be said: do NOT bring it to basic lol.

Thanks for all of the helpful information . I will just plan on keeping it off base unless rules change. Good luck with getting the club and team up and running again.:thumb:
