hi,

I've heard rumors that people applying to either SA's or ROTC can only be US citizen, and have to renounce their other citizenship.
Is that true?

yes it is true if you are going to serve in the united states military and fight wars you cannot have citizenship with any another country other than the united states.

Thats quite a blanket statement tens of thousands of people who are not US citizens do serve in the United States Military and do fight wars (some of them die in wars) but to the OP question, I think that is correct for any commissioning program. I stand to be corrected but when my brother was in the early stages of applying to WP his citizenship was an issue as he was born in the UK and our mother is British but I don't remember it being that hard an issue to resolve though he never got to that stage.

I do though remember hearing a story a couple of years back about a WP grad killed in Iraq whose uncle was the New Zealand Defence Minister and it was stated at the time in the press that he held dual US/New Zealand citizenshp but then the press have been known to be wrong.

That applies only to officers.

yeah there are thousands of people who serve in the united states military who are not citizens but they are enlisted. He asked if people who attend SA and do ROTC can have dual citizenship and the answer is no because your an officer.

this has been discussed before on this forum - if you do a search you can read through the discussions.

I have found an older one, but there was the question for someone who is not a citizen. Since I am American and have dual citizenship, that is something diffrent

you can not have dual citizenship and be an officer in the US military...

you can enlist, but you may not command US troops unless you renounce your other citizenship.

okay, thanks. I assume however, that one must not renounce prior to being commissioned?

From the USNA catalog:

Quote:
The possession and the use of a foreign passport in preference to a U.S. passport raises doubts as to whether the individual’s allegiance to the United States is paramount. A security clearance will be denied or revoked unless the foreign passport is surrendered.
Anyone who possesses a foreign passport must return the passport to the appropriate country’s embassy or consulate, requesting a return endorsement. The endorsement is a prerequisite to any security clearance determination. "

I have never known anyone to get a TS clearance with a dual citizenship.

thank you. I guess I fall under the categories:

a. Dual citizenship is based solely on parents' citizenship or birth in a foreign country
d. Individual has expressed a willingness to renounce dual citizenship

I have to renounce either my Belgian or my American citizenship anyway when I turn 18.
