Hello all, I am a 2013 appointee, I have a few questions which may help all appointees.

1. What should we bring on I day
2. What is not necessary to bring on I Day?
3. What are some things our parents can ship to us after BCT?
4. Is it a good idea to check in our bags and would the sponsor family mind?

I ask about checking in bag because we have to bring shampoo, deodorant, and toothpaste and it is not allowed to be taken in an hand bag.

Thanks alot all replies will be helpful.

my ALO stressed to only bring what is on the list and only what is mandatory and on the list. it is better to bring money to purchase an item at the C-store than it is to bring it on I-day because we have to carry our bag in our left hand the ENTIRE day.
as far as toiletries go such as shampoo, what i have been told is we will go to the C-store within days of getting at the Academy, so travel sized things are okay
i could be completely wrong about how soon we go to the C-store, but that was my understanding.
Also i was wondering does a solid deoderant/antiperspirant count as part of the carry ons that go in a plastic baggy?

This info must be on this site somewhere lol.

You really don't need to bring that much at all. The paperwork, the documents, yourself (oh and a razor/electric razor). The rest can be sent or brought to you during parent's weekend.

They will issue you shampoo, soap, etc. Or at least they did last year. Bring it if you're doing the B+B so that you have it for the sponsor's house. Other than that, MEN only need to bring the clothes on their back and a razor I believe?

Girls, are much different. Girls need to bring WHITE underwear and sportsbras. The I-day list says 8-12 pairs, but bring more than that! My flight did laundry maybe 3 times during basic, so extra pairs REALLY came in handy. Also, if your hair isn't oober short, bring stuff to put your hair up with. The C-store is very limited in what it has. So if you use hairspray or gel, bring that with. Also bring a large amount of hair elastics and bobby pins if you use those. The C-store sometimes has those, but not always. Also make sure to bring your own... feminine things... the C-store doesn't have much, and you want to make sure you're comfortable, especially in basic.

Just a girl's opinion, since USAFA doesn't really do well with preparing girls :)

Just so I'm clear... are guys issued underwear or should they bring their own?

The packing list says to bring shampoo, soap, and all that jazz. Maybe they changed it this year?

I'm kind of curious to see how the whole boot-carrying thing's going to work out, too...I'm thinking of just putting them in my bag, but would that make it too heavy/hard to handle?

You only have to put liquids and gels in the plastic baggy. Solid deodorants do not have to go in the baggy.

The list told us the same things to bring.. they issued it to us anyway haha.

Men are issued underwear. You may not like what they issue you... but you wear it anyways.

As for boots, I saw a variety of things. Some wore them, some carried them on their neck/in their bag. Honestly, they make you put them on if you have them anyways. But it's your decision. Also, if you didn't get your boots yet, don't worry. The new ABU boots are very comfortable and easy to break in. I didn't get my boots before hand, and I was fine. You don't wear your boots all the time for the first week or so anyways- they have a boot break in period where you only wear boots half of the time. I'm so excited to have another class in ABUs, us 2012ers won't stand out so much now : )

I'm so excited for you guys, I can't believe it has been a year already for me...

My ALO said they aren't issuing the shampoo and stuff anymore and that we have to buy it
That is why we need $250

Not sure I think I heard something like that but I know that they used to but no longer issue toiletries. That is exactly what we were told at the local orientation that the ALOs did

At Orientation in April, Appointees were told to bring $250 -- to be used for the purchase of additional toiletries, iron, ironing board, etc. during the period between June 25 and August 1 when first pay checks are deposited into their bank accounts. The Appointee handbook says $150 but at Orientation Appointees were told to have $250 in cash available for use until first pay checks are issued.

Once your pay and such get's worked out, you can go to the cadet store and buy what you need and they basically take it out of your pay. So whether you have money in your account or not, you'll be able to buy what you need.

magic money- money you never actually see lol jk
So we just need:

money

change of clothes for the B&B

shampoo, liquid soap, shaving cream, other essentials.

papers.

boots.

yourself.

?

Back to the briefs.

So do they issue Boxers or Briefs? If Boxers, should one bring an Athletic Supporter?

they give you briefs, and you'll be issued the DUKE. four of them actually :)

everyone loves the duke!

you need NOTHING that isnt on the list (guys). really! haha. we've been through it!

I dont like the name of that duke. what is it?? lol

Oh and my mom keeps telling me, "we have to go out and get you socks and pants..." I'm just like no! i'll be fine I swear!. I'm probably still bringing a change of clothes for the bed and breakfast. I don't want to go more than 24 hours with the same stuff on.....
