Is it mandatory to take both to apply? I know they take the best one and it's recommended to take both (and I have), but is it mandatory?

Both not..

mandatory, if you score really send them if you dont take them again, my son took sats only, took them a couple of times and had the best one sent/ good luck

Yeah it's not mandatory, but I liked taking them both anyway.

Just make sure that whatever you do, study for both sections Equally. I took the psat and got a really high math score, but a low critical reading score, so needless to say that I crammed a lot for the CR section and didn't worry about the math section so much. I didn't do terribly on either section, but my math score was considerably lower than what the psat had predicted it should have been. So be sure to study everything.

West Point admissions suggests that applicants take both the SAT I and the ACT with writing. It is not mandatory but some applicants do better on one test than the other.

While writing scores are not used for admissions - they are required. Students taking the SAT I are required to take the writing portion as a part of the test. Students who take the ACT MUST take the ACT with Writing for the scores from that test to count.
West Point admissions will "superscore" tests. In other words, when evaluating your SAT they will only look at the highest Math and the highest CR score, regardless of when you took your test. Same with ACT.
They will not take your High CR SAT and mix it with your high Math ACT, however.

You are not penalized for taking the test repeatedly - in fact this is encouraged. There is no reason to withhold scores from admissions or wait until you have a "good score" to report it. When you sign up for the test it is cheapest and most expedient to have your scores sent directly to admissions, this is most important next fall and winter as the admission process gets rolling along.
You can take the SAT up until the final testing date in January and the ACT until the final testing date in February.

Is that really so? I thought the highest scores regardless of where they come from are taken into account... Could someone confirm this please?
 
This is what my daughter's Regional Commander told her.
If you are concerned about this you should discuss your scores with your Regional Commander.
 
Just_A_Mom, I got confirmation. You were right. One can NOT use 1 score from the SAT and 1 score from the ACT to make the highest combo.

No, it's just as you said, only recommended and not mandatory.

I only took the SAT.
 
ACT Scores

I got a 26 reading and 29 math on my ACT. Do you think those are scores that are well qualified for the Naval Academy?
 
29 is good in math and at the naval academy they only look at english and math so your reading score doesnt even matter. Also, the math score is looked at more than your english score.
