I will be a junior this year in Indiana and will be applying to USAFA and USMA, and would like to know what kind of chances I have to get accepted.
I have a weighted GPA of 4.188 and am 9th in my class of 253. I am taking AP calc and engineering courses and have received the mathematics department award two years running. Varsity wrestling two years, cross country one, student leadership academy, youth leadership hancock county (the county I live in), National Honor Society, French Honor Society, wrestling team off-season captain, Civil Air Patrol Airman, National Young Leaders Conference representative, skipped a grade in middle school, minesweeper time of 221.

Any advice?

What it will ultimately come down to is how many people are applying in your district and what those people's records are in comparison to yours...

Like TheKnight said, it all comes down to competition. Ask around and see who else is interested in those academies, that should help a little.

I heard some advice NOT to worry about others, that I can only improve myself. Is there a contradiction here?

Well you really shouldn't worry about them but unfortunatelly your question cannot be answered any other way than seeing what you're up against.

You can either do as you said and keep improving yourself (best way IMO) but then you won't know just how big your chances are. I think it's best not to worry because if you do happen to check out the competition and realize you have better stuff than them it can lull you into a false sense of security causing you to try less (subconsiously). So it's up to you really.

So do YOU think I'm doing enough?

Is there more you COULD do? If you can't put one more thing on your plate, then your doing your best. If you have time to sit around with frequent down time, then maybe not. You are the only person that can really answer that. The crux of it is that you should be doing all you can do at a level to assure success in everything. If you put too much on your plate and thus grades drop, then you are doing too much. If you have time to twiddle your thumbs and spend time bored - perhaps you should consider shoring up your EC's, leadership or perhaps taking an additional class or adding a sport. There mere fact that you are asking if you are doing enough implies that you may have room in your life to do more... if you read these responses and wonder how on earth you could put one more thing into your life, then you probably can't. Do your best in everything that you do and strive for leadership in your endeavors.

Just my two cents worth ....

the only thing you really have to worry about is the minesweeper time. i believe it to be necessary that if you post your time it should be under 200. seriously

Many, if not most, MOCs have their nom committees conduct candidate interviews. So, whether you get a nom depends in part on your "paperwork" but also on how well you present yourself.

That is one of (if not the most) important part. Show them it's what you really want and that you're giving 110%. Also that there's no chance of quitting. My interviewer even asked me if I had a girlfriend and how would I deal with the separation or if she gave me an ultimatum to choose between her or the academy.

Yeah, work on that minesweeper time. Thats a little below average. :p All I can say is apply for every nomination you're eligible for. I only applied for one (got it thank God) but if I hadn't of gotten it, I would have been SOL.

Getting a nom is only a piece of the puzzle. Everyone is right that it depends on everyone else, so hopefully you can be high on your congressman's list. But your stats look good to me and best of luck.
