Hey everyone!

Before I head to I-day I am trying to pick what keyboard to buy so that i can get it ASAP after BCT. I have a question as to which I should get....I doubt many of you know much about keyboards, but if someone happens to....I was thinking of getting the Yamaha YPG 635/DGX630. My concern is the weight and size of the piano. It is a full 88 key digital piano and I will settle for nothing less! Just wondering about the space I will have in my dorm for a keyboard w/stand. Acceptable? Let me know advice especially anyone with experience! Thanks. :thumb:

As far as room, you will be in a 3 man room, so room will already be tight. Best thing is to wait and see who your 4 dig roomies will be and see if its ok with them. It will make the room quite a bit smaller.

The only instrument I play is....

Rock Band.

On Easy.

I suck at music.

Good question. I was actually wondering the same thing

Is it a given the freshman will have 3 to a room? For how many semesters? If so, is the room the same size as the 2 per room some of them stayed in at Summer Seminar?

All rooms are designed the same, the furniture is just a tad different depending on 2 or 3 man. I'd say 95% of 4 digs will be in 3 man rooms and even some 3 digs. Construction has taken out many rooms.

well how much room could I have for the keyboard if the stand isn't built-in. Would it be easy to put under bed or on shelf and pull down when I want to use?

Can't put anything under the bed lol. It's all drawers. Not really a shelf to put it on either. Could put it vertically against the wall. Like I said, I'd wait to find out what your room situation will be when the times comes.

just hope your in sijan for them 2 man rooms. If you get vandy.. itll definitely be 3 man.

When should be bring/send ski clothes? If we bring them PW, will it be OK and will he have somewhere to put them?

yep; you can put em in your overhead space above your closet. and you're alllowed to have em if they're ski clothes

Depending on your squad, you MAY be able to keep a keyboard in your squadron's SAR. But it depends on your squadron. Generally, you won't have that much time to play a keyboard anyways. I would suggest waiting until next year, and using the piano in the Oasis if you have an itch to play.

But even some of Sijan is going to 3 man rooms for upperclassmen. I'm going into 33, and all our three degrees are in 3 man rooms except for one room of boys and one room of girls :frown:

Don't mean to take this off topic, but when is all the construction suppose to be completed?

I heard it's planned to continue for the next several years.

I was in Vandy tower last year, and it's taking them a year to do half of the tower...

Well....there is no way im waiting a year!!! lol. Ive been playing for 9 years now and the 6 week summer will be the longest time I've been away from touching one! lol. But there is a community piano you can play on?

So are you saying some squadrons will not let you have an instrument in your room? What is your squadron's "SAR"?

You are allowed to have an instrument in your room. But since there's a 99% chance you'll be in a 3 man room, you really won't have anywhere to put it. It wouldn't fit in the overheads, and there's really no room to stand it up in a 3 man room. I had a smaller size keyboard in my room though, that I just stuck on top of my desk. The other thing is finding time to play it, since you'll pretty much only have time during ACQ, when you should be doing your homework, or your room mates are doing homework and don't want to hear it. If you do get one, get headphones. I had my flute and violin in my room and wasn't able to play them in my room much. There is a community piano in the Oasis in Sijan that no one really uses much.

A SAR is a "squadron assembly room". Every squad has one, and it's basically a common room where you have squad meetings, or some squads have TVs and pool tables and the like in there. Some squads may let you keep a keyboard in there.
