Does 20/400 and beyond apply to usafa? It doesn't say so on the website, but it says so on the dodmerb list. If so, how hard is it to get waviered?

as long as you're correctable to 20/50 you're fine. my eyes are actually right about 20/400, but i'm hoping i can get PRK junior year so I can fly. Just go through your DoDMERB physicals and evaluations this summer and you should be all set.

Have you been told not to fix them yourself? Lol

i got a question that kinda goes along with the BCG's. i can't seem to find the answer anywhere in the book, so hopefully somebody knows here. here goes:

i only need glasses to read stuff far away, for example if i'm in the back of the classroom and i need them to read the markerboard, etc. i do not need them to drive or anything. i can read fine and see things up close just great. do i still need to wear those repulsive frames?

I was like you, I didn't really need glasses to function, I just needed them for blackboards, etc. I just didn't send in my prescription. I wasn't issued BCGs and I was fine. You may want them just in case though.

Ok that's about how my eyes are, maybe a little bit worse. But if I get to basic and decide I can function the same without the BCGs, its ok to lose them?

Edit: Not like its that big of a deal. But if I can get by without them...

thanks for your help. the thing is, is there a lot of classroom work during BCT? i heard there was some, but i'm not sure because i'd need the frames if there was a lot of classroom work. i already stick out like a sore thumb, and getting rid of the frames would ease the tension. gracias.

this is very important. DO NOT GET CIVILIAN EYE SURGERY like lasic or what not. if you get it you cannot apply to usafa. they will not allow you in. if you haven't already switch to soft lenses if you wear contacts. makes the dodmerb stuff a lot easier. I had to get a 2nd eye evaluation because i didn't follow all the regs regarding Ortho-k lenses. just a heads up here...

Wearing BCGs won't make you stick out...wearing a suit for I-day will. :thumb:

On that note...

Wearing an Air Force Academy shirt on I-day also attracts some extra attention I have heard.

i mean my eyes are like super bad:eek: My corrected vision is at 20/20 but without glasses they are way beyond. Still ok?

commissioning standards are that your eye prescription is less than 8 diopters. A waiver beyond that is up for debate. If you want a better answer you can always write Mr. Mullen in the DODMERB forum.

yeah my prescription is not beyond -8, but visual acuity is beyond 20/400
