My son is going to be a member of the 2013 class and I was wondering what types of medical evaluations will he receive and how regularly is he allowed to go to the dentist. Kind of random questions, but their is no information in their logging in packets about this.

Most of the medical evaluation was covered by DODMERB. They will get a general physical when they arrive to assure that they are ready to begin training. They also get a fairly careful screening before they go to sea to make sure there are no issues that may present themselves in a foreign port. Some of the countries that they will go to have less than optimum health facilities.
They will also have a dental check before they go. They can make dental appointments while they are there but, if they forget to go they are subject to a class 2 infraction for failure to comply with a lawful order. As I recall that can amount to 50 demerits, 50 hours of extra duty and up to 5 weeks of restriction.
My D/S makes his appointments with our family dentist when he gets home.

Well first off thank you for your promptness in replying. I have never found a website that helps and cares this much so thank you very much.

Also my son is not colorblind, but he has always had trouble with the tests. Do they give more tests like that during the Indoc process?

Yes, he will get another color blindness test when he arrives. If he fails he will be given a different test. D/S says he will be given several opportunities to pass, but, if he is truly color blind he can only be an engineer

Well the good thing is that he is not colorblind and I think he just gets nervous when taking the tests and he already wants to be an engineer. Good deal.

Also I was always told if someone is colorblind they are kicked out regardless. That is why he was worrying a little.

Is2day, I know one of you engineers really, really, well and I hold all of you in the highest regards.

Weldon21, I think that if your son was completely color blind they would have picked up on this during the DODMERB process. I've been told that there are varying degrees of color blindness and the "deckies' need to be able to distinguish the colors of various buoys. Hence the restriction to an engineering program if certain criteria are not met.

The problem with color vision has nothing to do with deckie/engineer. At KP it's all about the ability to be commissioned in the US Navy. Navy regulations require color vision.

The two allowable tests that they will get are the ishihara color plates and the FALANT. If one doesn't pass the color plates (the one with all the dots with numbers you have to read) then they move on to the FALANT which is one light atop another and they flash various combinations of red, white, and green.

If he passed the one for DODMERB he will most likely pass the one during Indoc.

So the consequence is dismissal from the academy if he should fail I assume?

Weldon21 Pace yourself! It's going to be a long 4 years. There will be plenty to worry about as they unfold. He passed DODMERB so I really don't think there is any reason for concern. :)

That's an understatement KPMarineopsdad! Weldon, trust us, color blind is the least of your worries. Not to scare you, but if your boy does not go in with the right attitude and work ethic it's my observation that KP will eat him alive

On the other hand, if he goes with the right attitude, he'll do fine and actually enjoy his time at KP.
