Does anyone know if it's this coming Sunday or the following Sunday when our plebe candidates are allowed to make their first phone call? I'll be waiting by the phone both Sundays to be on the safe side!! I do not want to miss my sons first call home!!

The Admiral said it will be July 19th and 26th for phone calls. He couldn't give a specific time. We're having my DS call on my cell which will be glued to my hip so there is NO CHANCE that I will miss the call. I had heard that it should be around 1 p.m. but you never know.

just a tip to the parents that are bugged out right now.
LET YOUR KID DO MOST OF THE TALKING
he only gets about 5 minutes to make the phone call and will want to tell you some things. don't shower him with questions. he'll tell you what he feels warrants telling
;)

Boy I will tell you that the first phone call you make home is a tough one on both ends. I can still remember standing in line at that pay phone and then when my turn came just barely being able able to croak out: "hello", "It's OK" etc... ending with "Love you - Bye" . Just being on the phone with my Mom & Dad was like a huge faucet being opened up inside- but it also was just the ticket needed to keep going as I couldn't ever imagine calling my Dad and saying "it's too hard". On the flip side as a parent on the receiving end-at VMI they don't let the Rats have cell phones so the first call home was unplanned. A very understanding woman at the church he went to loaned all of the Cadets her cell phone and let them call from the church- it was about 3 minutes long but was long enough to tell us that he was doing alright- and he didn't want me dead for sending him to VMI  and "send care package with "muscle milk" and power bars for his food box!" It was a huge boost for our morale and his as well (at least I hope his morale was boosted as well anyway!). Didn't get to call again for about another month but that was ok- the first one was the one we all needed. So- eager Moms and Dads- enjoy that first phone call from your "Sluggo" ! 35 years from now they too will be telling their kids and your Grandkids about that call!

The thing I remember most was that he wanted a "swiffer". 2 weeks prior to that call I doubt that he knew what a swiffer was, now he was asking for one.

...and there will be instructors within earshot so they will choose their words carefully - Is2day is right, let them speak, dont tell them how much you miss them that will only make it worse. I think we asked two questions - how are you doing? is it what you expected? the rest came out.

I suggest trying to have a pad of paper and a pen by the phone. Our daughter had a list of things she wanted us to send her. I would never have remembered it all without writing it down. Get used to them venting. Complaining is a serious sport at KP. They do it every chance they get. Let them get it out, but then just let it pass. It's not really that bad. But you are the only one they can really vent to right now.

And yes, she had plenty to say. I just let her talk for the most part. OK, I admit asking what she did that her arm was in a sling in those photos!

I thought that the first phone call was this Sunday and then in 2 weeks. I was not planning to leave the house until he called. We have lots of dead cell phone zones in my town.

I cannot express enough how blessed I am to have these threads. I just feel like there is someone who is feeling or has felt what I am feeling..my heart's breaking, tears flowing and can't concentrate on too much. Very proud and trust that he's in the right place

The Commandant's letter of 9 July states "Each Candidate will be permitted a brief telephone call on Sunday, 19 July and again on Sunday, 26 July." It seems we'll have to be patient and wait until the 19th.

To what letter of 9July of the Commandents are you referring? Where did you find it? Thanks!

Commandant's Letter

The letter was distributed at the 11 AM briefing on I day. If you want a copy send me a PM.

tears

I'm feeling the same...keep looking in his room...I got to stop this. I guess time will do it. waiting by the phone also...we're all in the same boat and we love our Son's and Daughters...I wonder if they would be pissed if they knew we were like this at home.

They don't seem to get pissed they just shake their heads and call us pathetic.
They're kind of right:smile:
