I was just wondering what a USAFA acceptance letter would look like compared to a rejection letter. Is the acceptance letter actually a letter or is it a sort of package?

When my daughter rcvd hers she was not at all expecting it ..It came in early December and it was a Large Postal Mailer with USAFA photos on the front...Very exciting to get in the mail!!!

She is in BCT right now!!

Good luck on your quest!

Nick,
Mom22gals is right - you really can't miss it. Large 8.5 x 11 packet with USAFA pictures and clearly labeled on front cover "Offer of Acceptance Enclosed".
Like her daughter, my son is also at BCT now. Good luck to you.

Oh (and the mom in me is coming out...) just a bit of advice - try very hard to get DODMERB and your Nomination packets completed this summer before you head back to school. Also, if you're not training now for your CFA, it's a good idea to start soon. You'll find yourself light years ahead of others if you do.

So, if you just get a small letter in the mail, it means you didn't get in? I've already started training for my CFA, but I'm only going to be a sophmore this year so I don't think I should start the other stuff until junior year.

Can't speak for AFA but my son got lots of small envelopes from USMA before the big envelope finally came. Just saying... don't freak out every time you get a small AFA envelope in the mail.

Same here. I haven't gotten an acceptance letter, but I have gotten many letters from Admissions regarding anything from DODMERB, to the Candidate Kit. I hope I will see that "big envelope" someday.

From the yrs on being on this board, those letters do not go out until Mar. The big packets go out as early as Nov.

Does an LOA just guarantee a letter of acceptance/appointment? If so, why don't they just send you the letter of appointment instead of messing with a LOA.

Thanks

An LOA is a contingent appointment. It depends on you fulfilling another requirement before a full appointment can be awarded.

Letters of Assurance are used as "early action" offers to highly qualified candidates. Some academies cannot wait until January for the required MOC nominations before they offer and appointment, if they did they may lose many of their "top picks" to other places. By letting you know that they want you, they can potentially sway your decision their way, keeping you from looking elsewhere.

They can give you an appointment (LOA) contingent on getting a nomination (in most cases, the contingency is the nomination, although it is not limited to that) or contingent on passing the CFA, maintaining your grades, or passing DODMERB.

Theoretically, LOA's can go out at any time. USMA sends them out earlier than the other academies, usually on the basis of SAT scores. USAFA sends them highly qualified candidates before nominations are submitted, as does USNA, to make sure the candidate knows that he/she has a place in the upcoming class reserved for them, as long as they fulfill the missing requirement.

Everyone wants to feel wanted. LOAs accomplish this.

The academies cannot legally offer an appointment until the candidate has received a nomination.

An LOA is a way for the academies to say "Based on what we know now, you will be appointed if certain conditions are met." The big condition is usually "if you receive a nomination". LOAs can also be given before medical qualification is determined.

Nick - apologies from me to you. In reading your other posts I had inferred/assumed that you were a rising Senior. If you are a rising Junior, you have plenty of time on these things (just follow this advice next summer).

I believe Summer Seminar applications open up on/around first of the year so try to apply for that as soon as it opens up. Oh, and if you don't get accepted for SS, don't worry about it - my son received rejection letter for SS and I think that motivated him even more. He ended up receiving the LOA in mid-Oct, appointment from our Senator in Nov and Appointment pkg in early Dec. Pima is right, however, in that most acceptances are not mailed until March. The ultimate goal is not the LOA but rather, the Appointment. Do what you can now to make yourself an attractive candidate.

My son registered with USNA and USAFA in his Freshman yr of HS and received many smaller letters before his senior year. You're doing fine.

For the Class of 2012, my son's envelope said "OFFER OF APPOINTMENT INCLOSED."

Sounds like they finally ran out of the misspelled "INclosed" envelopes and are now using the proper spelling "ENclosed."

Actually, I'm a rising sophmore. I'm going to apply for the Summer Seminar in two summers ( I wont be old enough next summer.) I get those letters because I registered a while ago also. Thanks:thumb:

I get to apply to the Summer Seminar next summer! :) Hopefully I will get into it.

You will get your chance! Just keep doing what your doing. You are already getting ahead by asking questions now. Good for you!

I have twins that each received LOA's from the Naval Academy (where they are now with the Class of 2013). On that letter it copied the congressman and two senators. True, you still have to get the nomination -but- in reality, it's basically a done deal unless you do something REALLY stupid, like a D.U.I., or something. They are going to nominate you once they realize you have an LOA. It would be absolutely foolish not to.

If you should get an LOA and you cannot see that a copy was also sent to the nominating sources, make sure you let them know that you have an LOA. That is extremely powerful!

In fact, both my sons got their LOA before they even had the interviews with the congressman/senators office. When they went into the interview, there was basically nothing to discuss. They didn't ask them anything other than just congratulate them. At the time, they didn't come right out and say, "We are going to nominate you." (That wouldn't be appropriate in an interview), but it was quite obvious that they were.

I have NEVER heard of a candidate who received an LOA *not* get a nomination.
