In looking at the pictures, the companies seem to have one PC in front of the company carrying a large metal rod (staff or flag?). What is this called? How do they decide who gets to carry it? Is it a random selection?

Didn't realize there was some much to learn about this new world!

guidon

its called a guidon, the person carrying it is the guide/guidon bearer, they pick people who have had that position in jrotc or they pick a person who is good at drill to be the guidon bearer. i was a guidon bearer all four years in jrotc and at our summer leadership school. the penant(flag) usually has their company's name on it or something of that nature. the guidon is broken down into 4 parts, the feral, ornament, penant, and staff. the staff is the stick part u hold, the penant is the flag, the ornament is whatever is at the top of the staff next to the penant, (example: eagle, spike, ball..etc) and the feral is what goes at the bottom of the guidon, under the staff that lays on the ground when you place the guidon on the ground.

As above, it's the company guidon. During Indoc they will usually choose someone who they think is doing well or someone they want to put a little pressure on. Never really know for sure. Doesn't really have to be someone who is good at drill as the person doesn't have to worry about rifle drill moves.

It seems to me that at first they just carry a pole. Then they attach the company flag but, it is rolled up. Finally, the flag is unfurled and they can march behind their "colors"

?

Is the guidon bearer rotated throughout the indoc period or is it always the same person? Would make it much easier to locate my kiddo if it was on a rotating basis

Not rotated. Its an important position. Also know that they defend that flag with blood. Its their new job.

If you see your kid first up in the line up in the rows, they too, have a new position.

My son, who was a DI last year told me that the person who is the guidon bearer during Indo stays the guidon bearer all year. :) It is generally the most motivated Candidate who is chosen. :thumb:
