When getting a senator nomination, does it matter whether or not it is a state or US senator? Also, can it be a senator from another state?

Your two US Senators or your US Congressman from your state of residence can offer nominations, as can the President and Vice President.

No, they have to be from your state. And you get the congressman who is in charge of your district.

Man2112; the others said it, but I can see how it might sound a bit confusing. The nominations do NOT come from your representative/senators that fill the role of "STATE REP or STATE SENATE". In other words, not those that work in your Capital city of your state. It has to be the U.S. Senators for your state; and your U.S. House of rep for your district. These are the 3 people who have a full time office in Washington D.C.

I only reiterated the answer luigi and drew said, because the question came up last year and the word "STATE" really had a person confused. They called their "State" rep and senator looking for a nomination. When what they wanted was their U.S. Rep and Senator that represents their STATE. Best of luck. Mike.....

okay, thank you! so getting a nomination from a family friend who is a state senator from another state wouldn't help at all?

Nope. state senator's have no role in Academy admissions. If the person knows you well and knows your achievements you could use him as a letter of rec, but it wouldn't have anymore pull than your boss or a teacher, etc.

okay, thanks! but do you know if State senators ever come in contact with US senators from other states that often?

They could be married to one, it doesn't matter. You cannot be nominated by an "out-of-state" Member of Congress.

Yes, this is definitely a good "Angle" to come from. Many of your state's senators and representative do in fact talk/meet with your U.S. Senators and Representatives. The way I recommend it is to have you state senator write a letter of recommendation or even some sort of personal note to your U.S. Senator/Representative. Most U.S. Senators/Representatives requests letters of recommendations from teachers, boss, friend, etc... in the package that you are submitting to them. This would be a good letter of recommendation to include. But as said, it would just be a letter of recommendation; along with ones from your teacher, boss, friend, etc... Check with your U.S. state senator/rep. Most have a section on their website on academy nominations and what their requirements/procedures are.

Thank you very much christcorp, you always seem to have good answers to everything.
