I just got a post card in the mail from USAFA that says we have recieved a nomination for you from the following person:

Presidentail

You are now an official Candidate

Does this mean that I got a presidentail Nom??????????????

I'm not old enough to apply, but I think so seeing as they said they got that one and NOW you are a candidate. Congratulations by the way :)

Yes I got the same letter a few weeks ago. What it means is that you have "a" nomination, but not an appointment. You have a nomination, but each nomination source has a certain amount of appointments they can give out. Only 100 out of the 500 given nominations also get appointments. So you also should apply to other sources (senators, congressmen) in case you don't get one of the 100 presidential appointments. I have applied to every source that I possibly can:Congressman, 2 Senators, Vice-President, and Presidential.

Good Luck

You got it a few weeks ago? I sent in my dad's ORB in mid-June, and I haven't heard anything... I'm starting to wonder if it got lost in the mail or something.

I sent mine on June 16th. When the candidate kit opened up on June 30th it said that I had a presidential nom. I got the letter at least a week ago (probably more). What does that online application say? That is how I found out first. If not, then I would call your Admissions Counselor. I am getting a little worried because I sent something to the Admissions Office a week ago and they still haven't gotten it (and I live in CO Springs, mailed just a few miles away from the Academy).

Thanks

Kvster yes you have a qualified for a Presidential Nomination. As stated before it is not an appointment yet. You should still continue to seek Congressional and Senatoral Nominations. The more the better, but it only takes one.

That said many of your prospective classmates will have the same Presidential nomination because it is reserved for Military and Retired/Disabled Veterans children. The Academy can use that nomination avenue for 100 Appointments. That is going to less then 10% of your class, and in 2013 there were almost 100 children of Service Academy grads you can be sure most of them qualified for the same nomination source.

Our daughter had 1 Congress, 1 Senator, and 1 Presidential before her appointment arrived, and it was before the mass mail out in March. Good luck you have crossed one more bridge on your journey.

Thanks everyone! I know that its not an appointment ..... but I still am feeling kinda good. lol thanks again!

I didn't notice the nomination section on the online application before... it still says "none." I think I'll call Monday, then. I thought it was weird that I still hadn't heard anything from AFA, especially considering I got a letter from WP saying I had my presidential nomination only about a week after I sent it in.

How do you even apply for a presidential nom? I know I'am qualified for one but now what?

Contact your academy counselor. S/He will have what you need to know. The academy actually processes presidential nominations.

The easiest question to know is did either of your folks serve in the military? From there, it becomes a little more difficult unless they are still AD or ret. That is easy yes. The difficulty comes in with how many years they served and were they AD or reservist.

If your parents did not serve than you can't get one, it is simple as that!

The only noms you will see come down for the next few months will be presidential. Just because they have a Presidential, does not mean they will be apptd. The only appointed ones before Oct. will be Presidential with an LOA. The board does not meet until mid Oct. so don't start jumping to the conclusion that they are ahead of you or a more qualified candidate. The Presidential exists as a perk for military children. You need to realize that there are many military children who will attend 2 or 3 hs and it is difficult to gain leadership positions or sports teams if you move mid yr. Our best friends DD was on her 4t hs by her mid yr of her jr yr, after only moving to the 3rd one 7 mos earlier. As military parents climb the ladder they move fast to new positions, these assignments can be for a yr or 18 mos.

You are so right Pima. I think that's about the ONLY reason I retired when I did. Both kids were doing real well in their schools and I just couldn't see them graduating overseas from yet another school. (Plus the civilian world offered me some good money).

The only thing I would add to your comment, is that my son received a presidential nomination, and received his appointment the 1st of November without ever having an LOA. We remember it well because the BFE (Big Fat Envelope) arrived in the mail the same day my son was playing for the state championship football game. We didn't tell him it arrived, (Didn't want his concentration affected); and we spent the entire 3 hours at the game totally frazzled. Praying they would win; (Would be the 1st time in 34 years the school won; yet this was the 3rd year in a row my son and his team made it to state). Plus, not being able to tell anyone sitting next to us that my son received his appointment. (We obviously wanted to be the ones to tell him and congratulate him first). We did however tell his ALO who came to the football game to watch and was sitting right next to us. And it was the perfect ending. The team won the game, my son had the best game of his life, and right as the hoards of fans attacked the field and we found our son; the first thing out of his mouth was: "This is the greatest day of my life". Of course, the first thing out of MY MOUTH was: "Have I got a DEAL FOR YOU". After I and his mom told him about the appointment, he was even higher; which I didn't think would have been possible.

Anyway; sorry for the prideful rambling on. That was just one of the best days of our lives. But I wanted to emphasize that if you have a presidential, and get an EARLY appointment; you don't have to have an LOA first. Later... Mike....

I know I have been around here too long now, because I remember that day also!

A couple of other things to add onto that Presidential.

Just because you have one and you meet the board in Oct, it is not necessarily true that you will get an appt Nov 1 like CC's son. Some will not get them until Mar with the mass mailing. The better your resume the better your chances. There are multiple reasons.

First, you have multiple noms, i.e. are DS had 4, they waited to get all of the slates completed before making their decision on which one they would assign.

Second, If you have only a Presidential, the AFA knows what the typical WCS is that is the breaking point, if you score around that area than they will hold off until the end.

They want the best class they can make, it is a puzzle, you could have a Pres. nom that is also the highest WCS on the MOC, they then need to look at the MOC slate. Just because the candidate is number 1 WCS, does not mean the AFA must charge the MOC. They could take that number 1 and charge it to Pres., allowing number 2 to gain the appt.

Finally I did not mean to infer that you can't have an appt early without an LOA. What I meant to state is that typically the 1st board which meets in October will be filled with Pres. nom candidates, since most MOCs don't have their slate in or, their slate that they have submitted has been reviewed. No MOC appt, unless principal can occur without the entire slate meeting the board. I would believe Oct MOC appt without principal would be rare. If you have an LOA and a Pres. then you could be appt in Sept. (Remember you also have to have the entire file complete, usually DODmerb will be completed in Aug,because there is a turn around time from the physical to having it inputted in DOdmerb to getting it to the board and the teachers can be in AUgust also)

Around Turkey Day is when you start seeing the MOCs appts start to come out.

Remember just because you see someone that has your state on their profile does not mean they came from your sources, except senators, they could have gotten in via Cong., Pres. or even had an LOA. LOA's are not necessarily charged to the MOC, they can also come in under Supe.

It is incredibly confusing, and it will take you probably until you receive the fat package or thin letter to understand the process. Even after candidates get their appt, they call and ask the regional who were they assigned to (if they had mult. noms). SOme kids will call the MOC, and the MOC will say we had 6 out of our slate appt., but we do not know was charged to us yet!

My father served in the Military for 28 years. He retired I think 3 years ago or something like that.
