I was reading in the USMMA catalog about the service obligation and somthing caught my eye that I think I have miss understood. It says here that you have 5 ways to fulfill your service obligation after you graduate. One of which is Serving as a comissioned Officer in one of the branches of the armed forces. It says " Apply for and accept, IF TENDERED an appointment as a commissioned officer.....". My understanding previously was that when someone graduates from USMMA they can go to the USN,AF,USCG, or the Army without any problem. However after reading this.... is it possible for someone who graduates from USMMA to be "turned down" by a branch of the military??

on my first ship i sailed with a 2002 KP grad and he said one of his classmates applied for commissions and was not offered one. thus rendering that part of his obligation void. how that happened i'm not sure, all i know is the story that the second engineer told me.

Sure. They can be turned down. (BTW: Also remember USMC and NOAA. )

As reflected by Dodberb, different requirements for different military branches.
Although there are probably differences in medical and performance characteristics, here's one example ... (I don't have specs, so just go with example, and not the specifics--other Medical / experienced folks can jump in here)

To get into USMC, you have to run 3.0 miles is less than xx:00 minutes.
Other branches have a 1.5 mile requirement.

Our Mid, who meets qualifications in all other areas for all service branches, takes off on his qualifying run -- the last hurdle, so to speak.

At the midway point (1.5 miles), he has a qualifying score ( less than xx:00/2 ) for branches other than USMC. He finishes his run, but logs in at XX:45 :)45 seconds too long for USMC).

So, our hypothetical Mid would be INelegible for the Marines, but would be able to qualify for the other service branches.

In short, he'll still need to meet the requirement of the branches of service he wants to enter. I think this is the same for any other Academy , or ROTC graduate -- you need to be qualified to enter the branch upon GRADUATION as well.

There are real-world examples (none at USMMA that i'm aware of), of hopefuls riding a motorcycle, celebrating ... and having an severe leg injury which completely eliminates ability to run and qualify for any military branch. This is also why ALL the Academies don't want their kids riding motorcycles, or recreational skydiving (afa DOES do skydiving).

In the meantime, however, you mid is going to be more concerned on his upcoming test.... Get the grades, study.. GET to graduation!

Ok I understand this. But lets just say that this Mid meets all the requirements for the service that he wants to go into. Is there still a chance that he will not get "accepted"? I guess I could ask the question like......even if you do everything right is there still a chance that it might not work out for you?

sure, there are always possibilities and chances. It's like asking if Tiger Woods will miss a two foot putt. Sure it can happen, but unlikely.

Do you really read everything we write? Ask? Share?

Haha, yep, pretty much. I've been around (and a moderator)since the infancy of the board and have probably read 80-90% of the posts on here.

We try to keep a pretty close eye on the threads to stop them from either having erroneous information or getting "out of hand". You can be assured that the threads I don't read are probably read by one of the other moderators. It's not a bad volunteer gig for us though......I get to share my experiences and advice with everyone and in return get to enjoy some pretty darn neat people and conversations.

service commitment

There is also another branch that is overlooked. The Air National Guard. My husband is retired Air National Guard and he looked into it extensively for our son. Our son could sign on with the guard and be based right in our home state to fulfill his commitment and also possibly get a flying slot.

Haha, yep, pretty much..........

And he pretty cool too!

I am not a "regular poster", but have been on here since the beginning (and changed user names too) but I too read most all. And I always know that
KP2001 will speak up...

And to know that Jamzmom was a KP2001 worshipper too was a help :shake::shake::shake:

Oh I don't know if I would go so far as to deem me a KP2001 "worshipper". He's kinda a pain in my butt sometimes especially when he & the Jamz pm & I can't see what they are saying. Teasing aside, KP2001 is way up there in my book of good eggs. I consider him a prime example of Kings Point's finest. If he ever tries to depart from here, I promise to stalk him. :thumb:
