This is one question that I get different answers to...If my parents emigrated from a foreign country and I was born in the United States..am I first-generation or second-generation?

It can mean both those who are first born generation and those who immigrated.

But in the eyes of the US Government, your parents are immigrants and you are first generation Americans.

So on my application then I should choose that I am a first-generation?

Thanks in advance for ur help.

My dad was born in New York but my mom is from spain, i was born on Bitburg AFB in Germany, so on my moms side im first but my dads 3rd or 4th what do i put?

In my time, generation status was based upon family surname....in other words, it was based upon my father's status and not my mother’s; who was native born American.

However according to a friend of mine who works in an admissions office at a private local university, she stated that that does not matter anymore for their government reports. As long as one of your parents were born in a foreign country, which makes you a 1st generation in the eyes of all of the Department of Education Reports.

Hope that helps as it is the best I can do at this time.

Thats a ton of help, i appreciate it.

If you were born on the AFB you are an American citizen (but can hold duel citizenship) and thus I don't believe you are considered first generation since it seems your father is American and serving in the US military.
This is a great question to pose directly to your LT.

I just wonder why any of this matters?

Ah, yes....... "Diversity".
