Hi,

Does anyone know about the extra weekend of liberty that President Obama promised to all Midshipman at graduation in June? Does it apply to Plebes?

Thanks,

GoNavyMom

I would highly doubt it. Seeing how they werent even members of the brigade when he promised it, I don't see how it could apply.

Besides, would you actually expect him to KEEP a promise, especially made to members of the military?

:yllol:

President Obama never promised an extra weekend of liberty. His exact words were:

"For all you midshipmen returning next fall, I hereby grant you something extra -- an extra weekend."

He might have meant an extra weekend of duty, or an extra weekend of yard restriction.......

Now this is where one of our current Mids will have to refresh my memory...

I seem to recall that when the President visited a Service Academy, one of the things he would very often do was to issue a commutation of all remaining restriction and tours. It was almost a tradition, and the affected guys would proudly say they had received a Presidential Pardon.

Needless to say, back in the old days when restriction was served only on the weekends, reduction of any number of days was a Godsend, especially if you were the proud owner of a Black N sweater.

Is this tradition still in place, or would the current Mids have to be accused of threatening Republican voters in order to get a pardon from this schlub?

Midshipmen, I'm told that the extra ribbon on your chest is for the honor you earned, for only the second time in the storied history of the Naval Academy -- the Navy's Meritorious Unit Commendation Award. So I've consulted with Admiral Fowler, and I can make this announcement: For all you midshipmen returning next fall, I hereby grant you something extra -- an extra weekend. (Applause.) I should stop now. (Laughter.)

Key phrase is probably: For all you midshipmen returning next fall

Yes it is, he did absolve them.

"Now, I know it's customary at graduation for guests to bring a gift. And I have. All midshipmen on restriction for minor conduct offenses are hereby officially absolved. (Applause.) I did say "minor." (Laughter.)"

Prez promiser

obama promises= smoke and mirrors, slight of hand and misdirection. "pay no mind to that man behind the curtain". It may be a long 4 years for the military.

Folks, please remember that this is the USNA forum. If you want to talk politics, please take it to the Off-Topic forum.

And, remember, whether you agree or disagree with President Obama's actions, politics, etc., he is the President of the United States and the Commander-in-Chief. Please keep that in mind when you post.

Your friendly mod.

Though I did not always agree with the actions and words of our previous President, I nonetheless respected him in his role as our President, and as my Commander in Chief. I expect the President to keep a promise just as I expect the governor of my state, Gov. Mark Sanford to keep a promise. If he doesn't, he isn't the first person, nor will he be the last.

Hi All,

I posted the question yesterday because my daughter told me it came up/or there was an announcement at formation yesterday but she wasn't sure it applied to the Plebes.

It seems the promise is being kept and the time is being granted but it just wasn't clear as to who it was being given.

The definition of "minor" is delegated to the Superintendent. This normally means the 1000, 2000, and 3000 series conduct offenses.

To piggyback on USNA1985, Article 88 UCMJ (Contempt toward officials, which includes POTUS) applies to all members of the U.S. armed forces.

For CGA cadets....generally this means Class III offenses. I can't remember if anyone with a Class II offense got off, and certainly no one with a Class I offense did.

Of course, you need to really rack up Class III offenses to be restricted.

Your daughter can always ask her youngsters to ask her upper class. But like I said before, I doubt it would be given. President Obama said it would be given to returning members of the brigade, plebes are new members, not returning.

The military??? I don't expect he'll keep any promises if his his past performance is any indication!

BTW, this is a spot on observation in regards to this question from a former military, now civilian.
