So, I got an excited phone call from my DD this AM. She proceeded to try to explain to me about this "spirit mission" that they carried out this AM. Got up at 2AM, went into the Ward Room & did..... something??? She said they took pictures (evidence - are they crazy:eek:) and she would send some to me. Can someone explain spirit missions to me - are they just fun practical jokes that don't get you into trouble (hopefully - they even left "calling cards" to say who did it). She said they were hoping for lunchtime carry-on for it.

Spirit Missions promote class/company unity. Basically, you have something funny to do, that is non-destructive....you do it, usually under the cover of night.

Some examples....

Posting Urinanalysis schedules on the head (bathroom) doors. This legit happens from time to time, but that day people were lined up, asking where all of the HSs were who had the sample cups.

Painting the rock is another, sometimes dangerous, spirit mission.

Generally 4/c do spirit missions as a class, of by companies.

Sometimes exchange cadets also do spirit missions.

I remember one year the exchange cadets moved the soccer goals onto the parade field, and then drove the Diahatsu Tiger cars and the John Deer gators onto the field and had them sitting there in the morning like it was a Gators v. Tigers soccer game....all while we were supposed to be practicing drill. Another time exchange cadets moved sail boats onto the parade field. The key for many is pushing the envelope far enough that it is "good" without it being overboard.

Before I got to the Academy, an Air Force cadet wrote in mustard on all of the wardroom plates "AF". Sadly for that cadet, the mustard stained ALL of the plates overnight. That cadet was Masted.

Spirit missions are fun....and if done right, make the entire Corps happier. Upper class like to see their 4/c, especially ones in their company, doing this stuff.

Generally 4/c do it to show of their year, or their company. There is some competition between certain companies in the Corps of Cadets....almost like teams in a sports league.

Oh fun!! What company? You'll have to let us all know if they were successful! Glad to hear that they are having some fun.

So...if carry on is granted, does the entire 4/c class get it, or just the ones who went on the "mission"?

I don't remember getting carry on for a spirit missions for our company, just props from the RC....

In general, only the people involved would "get carry on" if it happened, but if it's a full class spirit mission, then they might all get it.

I haven't talked to her again to see how it all came out, but it sounded like it was just her company or the 4/Cs of her company with a little help with some of the upper classmen (they were assured that the doors to the Wardroom would be unlocked when they got there - they weren't, so some of them went outside, created a human ladder & got in through a window to open it from the inside ). It sounded like it was a prank pulled on the cadre of another company, but like I said, I was sort of unclear on all of what they did. She expects me to know who all these people are - I recognize some of the names, but don't know who is cadre for what company, so I say "uh-huh" alot and try to figure it all out later(Hotel is her company).

LOL... funny how that happens eh?!?! :) :shake::shake::shake:

they took the head table (where regimental staff sits) and set it up outside in one of quads (courtyards). its standard for the company that does the spirit mission to get carry-on at lunch and they did.

Thanks BR2011! It all makes sense now! She said something about moving the table and replacing all the place settings, but I couldn't quite figure it all out. She was excited about it, so I guess it was a sucessful morale booster, for her at least:smile:
