Hi parents,

When talking to our pc ds last night we innocently asked if there was anything that we needed to know from him about parents weekend.

We were then given a list of things to do / things to not do while we are with him for next weekend. No parent wishes any backlash on their child so I am glad that now we have the heads up and hopefully look like the confident, supportive, sane parents that we try to be. Questionable at times.:yllol:

If you can email your child, do so.

Also, be aware that YOU may have more information about what to expect/do on Parents Weekend than your P/C. They often don't find things out until the last minute. There were many times when I knew things before DD did last year and she was good at keeping herself informed. I doubt she'll ever forgive me for knowing when Recognition had started. . . . Oops.

Ya know...It's called ......wait for it.....wait.......wait...............PARENTS WEEKEND ........... so, just maybe, on the outside chance it is not against the long deep traditions being instilled in our young men and women, that we might, just might....be able to ask and get (without negative ramificaitons against our DS/DS) some information??? Some specific information that just might make the long, and for us, expensive trip more enjoyable and productive. We are less than four days away and some more specifics would seem to be in order.

Since some of us are traveling halfway across (or ALL the way across) the U.S. to support the instituion and our students???? Some may want to bring younger siblings that will miss school, some will need to be back at work on Monday and would like to maximize this precious opportunity to see the DS/DD.

Boggles the mind. Just Boggles the mind.

I think y'all are overthinking this....

There is a schedule on the parent's page....your plebe will be able to visit with you for a restricted amount of time on Friday. You will see them again at the parade on Saturday and then have liberty to do whatever it is you want from Saturday until most likely Sunday evening. (May be some exceptions due to the band activity.) They will not be out until Monday, they won't be out until late Sunday....they will likely be required to be back in time for a PKT on Sunday evening.

If you want to attend the events listed you can, if you don't then you may opt out. If you just want to hang around the parent's associations tables that's fine too. Your son/daughter will let you know when they can and can't hang out as soon as they know (likely the day or day before). Since the football game doesn't start until 1430 they likely won't be getting off campus until around 4:30/5pm.

As you will learn over the next four years: be flexible. When your son/daughter goes off to sea there will likely be a time where you will get a call and the next day your child is home for a few days. Or you think they will be home for two weeks and all the sudden they are leaving after 2 or 3 days. This is one of those times you have to set aside the 'plan everything down to the minute' mentality that most of us (myself included) have and play things a little looser. Plan on lots of sleeping and eating. Maybe a little shopping, possibly NYC (don't forget there will be other, longer, opportunities to do this).

If you have to be back home Monday then make plans to be back home Sunday and it is okay to let your child return to campus a few hours early (my parents did). If you can afford to take the Monday off then plan on returning later Monday and take all the time you have and then enjoy a few hours on your own on Monday before heading out.

This will be my 3rd parent weekend so I think I will weigh in.......
It is PARENT weekend and you will all feel very welcomed. The parent associations along with the academy do a wonderful job in putting this on. Here's what you can expect (based on my experiences): Show up EARLY on Friday (if you can) and take in the 9/11 Memorial Ceremony and Colors. You might want to email your pc ahead and see if you can attend a class with him/her. The designated meeting place is Land Hall, but usually I have met up with my son out in front of Wiley Hall or Delano where there are tables set up by parent associations selling all kinds of great KP items. Then you will go to Wiley Hall and pick up your tickets, etc. and you will be given lots of free goodies (canvas bags and magnets, coffee cups, etc.) You will then probably be in time for lunch muster (if your pc has been in class all morning you may be seeing them for the first time) There is usually a tent set up with the barbeque lunch and you will be able to dine with your pc. This is the time where you will see that man/woman in their khakis looking so sharp! Take pictures! After lunch student may have classes or if not they usually can hang out with you.
Do go to the Midshipman life panel, you will have a chance to ask lots of questions there. That will be in the auditorium. Also don't miss the Simulators, there you will have an opportunity to see what it's like at sea. The waterfront will be open as well and you can board the King's Pointer for a tour.
The Family Dinner in Delano is nice as you will be able to get a sense of the food (though they say it's better on parent weekend!) and top off Friday with the Beat Retreat. A long day, but you will really enjoy it.
Saturday, again, get there early. You can go to Land Hall and enjoy donuts and coffee and then get a look at your pc's barracks either before or after the class picture and ceremony. That will be out on the football field. Afterwards they muster in front of Delano and the eagle pinning happens before lunch (I think). You will then have time with your pc before it's time for the regimental march-on and game. The pc's usually have to sit together for the game but you will be able to see them. After that they muster once more and are given instructions. Then you probably will be able to take them out for a nice dinner, back to your hotel for some R&R, etc.
Everything will make sense, it has always been very organized in my opinion, and there are very nice upperclassmen, parents and staff that can help if you have questions.
In between times there is Land Hall with couches, chairs, lots of places to rest and it's a great place for the younger siblings. Also don't miss the Maritime Museum.
I hope this helps. I know what you are going through and I can tell you that this weekend will be a highlight of your life. Busting those buttons of pride! Have fun! I know I will!:thumb:
One last piece of advice....COMFORTABLE SHOES!

Dave's Mom has done a really nice job of describing the weekend. We, too, will be attending our third Parents Weekend, and will travel from the other side of the country. Although you will probably not get as much time with your son--especially if he is a football player--as you would like, there are many other advantages and rewards to Parents Weekend that you will enjoy. Seeing his room, meeting his roommates, being able to visit classrooms and sit in on classes, meeting and visiting with other parents from all over the country--all of these are great highlights and memories. You will leave with a much clearer understanding of what his life is like there, which will help get you through until Christmas! I suggest that you let your son/daughter know that you will be at Colors (if you will be), so they know to watch for you; ask about attending a class; and set a place and time to meet, etc., before you travel. We have all gotten so accustomed to constant cell phone connection that the first time we visited we didn't communicate any of our plans to our son in advance. If you do have questions or need help during Parents Weekend, you will be amazed at the helpfulness of the staff AND the students.

Very nice update from Dave'sMom and Learninglots.....it is very much appreciated by those of us that have no clue what to be flexible about.......information is power and without any information....some of the really good memories might not be made and they will one time, first time parent weekend memories.

Not trying to plan everything down to the last detail, just want to be there to catch the train!!!!!

The updates from DavesMom and LearningLots - One minor comment - if Barney Square (the traditional muster area in front of Delano is still torn up for construction) there will likely be some slight modifications to the muster and meet locations, but otherwise I expect the description, which is virtually 100% of what we experienced last year - is likely to be dead nuts on...for those of you who are traveling across country for the first time on this I'd also suggest if you still have specific questions you email them to Shirley Anthony at the Academy....early this week so she might have a chance to answer the few remaining ones you have.

I received a very detailed email today from my son with an attachment from USMMA with the full schedule of events for the weekend. I tried to copy and attach but file would not work with me. If you want to see full schedule, other than what is on the parent's page ask your son/daughter to send an email. Hope this helps. If you want me to forward my email send me a message at aprilchobert@hotmail.com and I'll pass it along.

Bz22mom,

You could copy and paste the schedule here. Don't try to attach the file.

Just spoke with the folks at the Parents Association.....only thing they are aware of that has changed from their posted schedule of events is the Rugby Game........did not get the new time.....sorry....

New update from the Parents Association....glad I could still edit this:

"The program was sent to the printer last Friday, so any changes made may be for the regimental side which is what the Mids/PC's /kids are doing"

Safe Travel to everyone!

Awesome!! Will we get to see KP humiliate CG in multiple sports or will the rugby team be humilating another school?

KP will humiliate CG in soccer and women's volleyball as well according to the schedule!:shake:

GO KP BEAT COAST GUARD!!:thumb:

Hey everyone, remember this is a friendly rivalry.

I was thinking the same thing myself....seems a bit over the top to me.

I remember these same discussions last year and the tone was much more tongue-in-cheek.

Beat CGA, yes, definitely. No need to "humiliate." Routs tend to be much more boring to watch anyway.

Oh, and go KP cross country - away at Mass. Maritime this weekend.:thumb:

What in the world????? The greatest thing about a friendly rivalry is .........The Rivalry !!!!! So please, lets not water this thing down too much, a little trash talk is not only welcomed .......but encouraged!!!!

At the very center of this rivalry is a Football Game. Not interpretative sailing. So, without stepping on the toes of any hover moms ......... let me assure you......... the Coast Guard Academy football team has every intention of rolling into Captain Tomb Field and punching your precious Mariners squarely in the mouth. :thumb: :beer1:
