Training ex/security incident?

Ya gotta love the Government- Right hand and left hand never actually know what the other is doing. Frankly though of all days to conduct a training mission like that on the Potomac- this seems like a really poorly thought out plan even if it was "coordinated". It seems hard to believe that on 9/11 it wouldn't have crossed someone's mind that people will have heightened sensitivity to any kind of perceived disturbance. Don't know who the Coasty was who oked that plan but I suspect he is gonna be right up there with the guys who OKed flying AF1 followed by F15s over NYC and the Statue of Liberty a couple of months ago.

Anyone know what happened in DC this morning?
The Coast Guard fired shots?
http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/09/11/potomac.boat/index.html

it was a scheduled USCG training exercise that was witnessed by overzealous citizens who reported it to "Local" law enforcements agencies who reported it to the FBI who failed to check and see that the exercise was scheduled.....

which was picked up on by the media hounds that are everywhere down there....

and as "Rumors" started to float about......"shots were fired" and this was reported by an overzealous reporter.

I just watched the news-feeds........LOL...... two CNN reporters just cackling on like two broody hens about to lay the biggest egg of the day. Then when they find out it was just a routine and scheduled exercise they demonize those who day in day out protect that security zone.

Very poor reporting!!!!

bruno......I'm truly amazed that you would even attempt to make that comparison. The President is moving about Washington......crossing the Potomac and you find it out of character that the United States Coast Guard would have several boats on the river out patrolling and protecting those waters. Unbelievable!!!

The calls about a boat interdiction and shots fired were erroneous my friend.

There are some discrepancies here that need to be sorted out.

Reports of shots fired:
When CNN called after those reports, the Coast Guard Command Center initially said it had no immediate information.
Later, Coast Guard officials said they were looking into the possibility that it may have been a training exercise
HUH?????

Seems as though the right hand didn't know what the left hand was doing.
Federal agency emergency operations centers were not aware of or notified about the exercise, and they began implementing response procedures, a federal source said.
Flights at Washington's Reagan National Airport were grounded from 10:08 to 10:30 a.m. ET, said Diane Spitaliere of the Federal Aviation Administration.
Upon hearing media reports, the FBI dispatched agents who arrived at the water's edge before learning from other law enforcement agencies that it was an exercise, said Supervisory Special Agent Katherine Schweit, a spokeswoman for the FBI's Washington Field Office.
The police department's Harbor Patrol, which is responsible for patrolling the Potomac, was not notified, law enforcement sources in Washington said.
The patrol has now demanded the Coast Guard notify it in the future before any training exercises on the Potomac, the sources said.

The video in Bruno's post is very telling.

I agree....so let me share the most important quote of that video.......I will tell you this, we (the Coast Guard) are charged with the 24/7/365 ......all day.....everyday.....all weather......for the security and safety of the maritime interests of the National Capital Region.............We train everyday......

Now I have seen training conducted on 11 Sept. I have no doubt that certain military units are training today.

Yes, especially on this day, this units presence was front and center.

They are also very sensitive about this day down there....and rightfully so.

Yes ......I think that those who have lost and suffered the most in respect to this day, will fully understand the charge laid out to those who seek that it never happens again.

The attention span of the average human is measured in minutes if not seconds. From my observations the public memory doesn't last much beyond the media coverage.

I would love to see this incident make the evening news to refresh the memory of the US public of the 9/11 tragedy's and remind them the bastards who planned it are still out there spewing their death to America mantra.

I would like to see that story followed by the remaindered that our troops are at war to prevent that type tragedy again and to hunt down the man responsible for it, "to the gates of hell if needed"

From a PR stand point the poorly planned training mission is a stroke of pure genius if used properly. it could happen:thumb:

Very little that was reported by CNN was confirmed, despite having more than ample time to do so. The training was typical, usually going on on the Potomic. No shots were fired.

This reinforces the point that sometimes news is more worried about QUANTITY than QUALITY. CNN has been back tracking since the "story" hit.

That's all I'm going to say about this.

There are discrepancies because a certain person at CNN wanted to run the story before doing any kind of confirmation. Shots were not fired. The training was very typical, low key. As for patrols of the Potomic, as it is an interstate waterway, the Coast Guard has federal jurisdiction. Station Washington works closely with local law enforcement agencies.
