Yes would love to know the same?

If your plebe is doing fall sports, you might want to check with him/her about the sports schedule for that period. We're playing it by ear a bit - although our son's travel plans only involve a LIRR ticket to Penn Station and another ticket on Amtrak.

We were told at the airport that service men and women are allowed to try to go standby on an earlier flight than scheduled. Our son will probably leave La Guardia on the 7:55 flight, but will be on liberty way before that according to the schedule. I scheduled the latest flight out, knowing that he may show up earlier and maybe get on another flight.

The policy regarding standby travel can vary widely depending upon the airline that you are using. I would check with them to find out what their "official" policy is. That said, sometimes agents are given a fair amount of discretion and they will go out of their way to help someone in uniform.

Yes. One agent helped our son get on a flight routed via WDC that was scheduled to ultimately get our son home 2 hours ahead of the non-stop flight leaving later... However, plane in WDC had mechanical difficulties, and arrived 2 hours AFTER the non-stop flight arrived. ;)
(No good deed goes unpunished... Aw, heck. Sometimes you wins, sometimes you don't ;) Was a nice try, anyway)

Depends on the airline. Several times my son got a "free" change to standby on another plane, but 3 weeks ago Delta charged him $50 to get an earlier flight. You can guess I'm going to try and not use delta.

Noted two West Pointers moving up to First Class on our way to Parents Weekend as they returned from liberty. Love those Uniforms.

Usually if you buy an inexpensive ticket their will be restrictions on it. So when you want to change something on that ticket you might have to pay for it. Read the fine print.

I personally know a gate agent who was "written up" for doing something similar. On Memorial Day no less! A "deadheading" pilot lodged a complaint.
